Lieutenant General Anindya Sengupta, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Indian Army’s Central Command, visited the elite Shatrujeet Brigade and reviewed its operational readiness, training initiatives and efforts toward integrating niche technologies into contemporary military training.
The visit highlighted the formation’s focus on remaining “Airborne, Agile and Future-Ready,” with emphasis on maintaining high levels of combat preparedness while adapting training methodologies to the rapidly evolving character of modern warfare.
During the visit, Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta was briefed on the brigade’s comprehensive training modules designed to sharpen combat skills and improve battlefield effectiveness. The modules incorporate technology-enabled training methods aimed at preparing soldiers for demanding operational situations while improving speed, accuracy, situational awareness and decision-making.
The Army Commander reviewed various initiatives being undertaken to integrate emerging and niche technologies into the training ecosystem. Such technology-driven approaches are increasingly becoming important as military operations evolve toward environments involving greater use of unmanned systems, sensors, precision weapons, electronic warfare capabilities, advanced communications and digitally connected command-and-control systems.
A major highlight of the visit was the inauguration of a state-of-the-art Modular Containerised Indoor Shooting Range by Lt Gen Sengupta. The new facility has been designed to provide soldiers with realistic and technology-enabled conditions for developing reflex shooting, marksmanship and weapon-handling skills.
The modular nature of the facility provides greater flexibility for conducting specialised shooting training while allowing troops to practise essential combat skills in a controlled environment. Indoor training facilities can also enable more consistent training schedules irrespective of weather and external range conditions.
For airborne troops, the ability to react quickly and accurately during rapidly developing combat situations remains particularly important. Paratroopers can be tasked with operating deep inside contested areas, securing strategically important locations, conducting airborne assaults and carrying out specialised missions where speed, surprise and individual combat proficiency can significantly influence operational outcomes.
The introduction of facilities focusing on reflex shooting and realistic weapon handling therefore complements the broader training requirements of airborne formations, where soldiers are expected to operate with a high degree of initiative and tactical flexibility.
During his interaction with the troops, Lt Gen Anindya Sengupta commended the paratroopers for their high morale, professionalism and mission-oriented approach.
He called upon all ranks to continuously innovate and adapt while remaining prepared to dominate an increasingly complex and evolving battlespace. His emphasis reflected the Indian Army’s wider focus on combining traditional soldiering skills with technological capabilities and innovative training methodologies.
The Shatrujeet Brigade is among the Indian Army’s premier airborne formations and its personnel undergo specialised training for airborne and high-readiness operations. Such formations are expected to maintain exceptional levels of physical fitness, weapon proficiency, tactical awareness and operational readiness owing to the demanding nature of their missions.
Airborne formations can provide commanders with the ability to rapidly deploy combat power and undertake operations at considerable distances from conventional ground forces. Consequently, maintaining readiness requires continuous training covering airborne operations, small-team tactics, weapons handling, communications, navigation and coordinated battlefield manoeuvres.
The Central Command Army Commander’s review of the brigade comes as the Indian Army continues to modernise its training infrastructure and incorporate technology into operational preparation.
The Army has increasingly emphasised realistic training environments capable of replicating contemporary battlefield conditions while preparing soldiers to operate effectively alongside new-generation surveillance platforms, communication systems, drones and other technological capabilities.
The inauguration of the Modular Containerised Indoor Shooting Range represents another step toward strengthening this training ecosystem by providing troops with a modern facility specifically designed to enhance fundamental combat shooting skills.
Lt Gen Sengupta’s visit also underlined the importance being placed on innovation at the formation and unit levels. Soldiers and commanders are increasingly being encouraged to identify practical technological solutions that can enhance training, logistics, surveillance, mobility, battlefield awareness and operational effectiveness.
