As the Indian Army’s Western Command marks its 80th Raising Day, the occasion has coincided with a remarkable milestone in the life of one of its distinguished veterans. Brigadier KI Kumar, ASC (Retd), has celebrated his 100th birthday, completing a century defined by military service, honour and dedication to the nation.
To mark the veteran’s 100th birthday, a cake and bouquet were presented to Brig KI Kumar at his residence in Chandigarh on behalf of the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command. The gesture was made as a mark of respect and gratitude for his years of service to the Indian Army and the country.
Brig KI Kumar’s story is also closely connected with an extraordinary military family in which four brothers chose careers in the Armed Forces and devoted their lives to serving the nation.
Among them was Major Devender Kumar of the Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME), who served with 144 Air Defence Regiment during the 1971 operations.
Another brother was the legendary Colonel Narendra “Bull” Kumar, PVSM, KC, AVSM, Padma Shri and Arjuna Award recipient, of the Kumaon Regiment. A celebrated soldier and mountaineer, his pioneering expeditions and reconnaissance in the high Himalayas played an important role in establishing India’s knowledge and strategic understanding of the Siachen Glacier region.
The fourth brother, Major KI Kumar, SM, of 9 PARA (Commando), made the supreme sacrifice during the Indian Army’s 1985 Everest Expedition, adding another chapter of courage and sacrifice to the family’s remarkable military legacy.
The coincidence of Brig KI Kumar’s 100th birthday with the 80th Raising Day of Western Command has made the occasion particularly significant. While Western Command celebrates eight decades of service, operational readiness and contribution to national security, the veteran’s century-long journey represents the generations of soldiers who helped build that legacy.
Four brothers, one uniformed tradition and a shared commitment to the nation the Kumar family’s story stands as a powerful example of military service spanning courage, camaraderie, achievement and sacrifice.
