Lieutenant General Neeraj Varshney, Commandant of the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), delivered an insightful talk on the growing impact of emerging technologies on modern military logistics at the Military Institute of Technology (MILIT).
Addressing participants of DSTSC-09, Lt Gen Varshney spoke on the theme “Impact of Emerging Technology on Operational Logistics,” highlighting how technological advancements are reshaping the manner in which armed forces plan, manage and sustain operations.
The General Officer emphasised that emerging technologies are increasingly enhancing operational agility and resilience. Key areas highlighted during the interaction included AI-based forecasting, predictive maintenance, efficient supply-chain management, autonomous systems, real-time battlefield visibility and smarter management of critical resources.
Artificial Intelligence and data-driven systems can enable military planners to anticipate logistical requirements more effectively, optimise the allocation of resources and improve the speed at which supplies and equipment reach forces operating in demanding environments.
Predictive maintenance is another important area where emerging technology is changing traditional military logistics. By identifying potential equipment failures before they occur, technology can help improve platform availability and reduce operational downtime.
Lt Gen Varshney also highlighted the importance of sustaining forces in contested environments, where conventional supply chains may face disruption and commanders may be required to make rapid decisions based on changing battlefield conditions.
Autonomous systems, enhanced battlefield visibility and intelligent logistics networks are increasingly capable of providing commanders with greater situational awareness while making the overall logistics chain faster, more responsive and resilient.
The interaction also underlined a fundamental reality of warfare — no two wars are alike. As the character of conflict continues to evolve, military logistics must similarly remain adaptive and capable of responding to different operational requirements.
The session at MILIT reflected the Armed Forces’ increasing emphasis on leveraging emerging technologies to strengthen operational preparedness and develop logistics systems capable of supporting future battlefields.
