The Indian Army’s Northern Command organised its quarterly Subedar Majors’ Conclave, bringing together unit Subedar Majors from formations across the Command for discussions on key matters concerning troops and units.
During the conclave, the Command Subedar Major interacted with Subedar Majors representing various formations and units. The discussions covered a wide range of issues related to administration, troop welfare, training and other important aspects affecting the functioning and effectiveness of units.
The interaction provided a platform for senior Junior Commissioned Officers to exchange views, share experiences from their respective formations and highlight issues concerning soldiers at the grassroots level. Such interactions also help ensure that feedback from units reaches the higher command structure while important organisational priorities are communicated effectively to troops.
The conclave highlighted the pivotal position occupied by Subedar Majors within the Indian Army’s regimental system. As the senior-most JCO at the unit level, a Subedar Major plays an important role in mentoring soldiers, maintaining discipline and morale, safeguarding regimental traditions and serving as an important link between officers and troops.
The Command Subedar Major structure itself is a relatively recent initiative within the Army. Northern Command became the first Army Command to appoint a Command Subedar Major in June 2025, with the position designed to provide senior commanders with direct inputs on matters concerning Junior Commissioned Officers and Other Ranks.
Northern Command has continued to use periodic interactions with Subedar Majors to discuss operational, administrative and training challenges. A previous quarterly interaction held in July 2026 also focused on operational preparedness, technology integration, administration and training, underscoring the growing importance of senior JCO leadership within the command structure.
The latest conclave reaffirmed the Subedar Major’s role not only as a senior soldier and adviser but also as a mentor, leader and custodian of the traditions and ethos that form the foundation of the Indian Army’s regimental system.
