Guwahati, October 5, 2026: Assam Police have arrested two persons, including a retired Army jawan re-employed with the Army on a contractual basis, for allegedly passing information on Army movements to a Pakistani intelligence operative. The arrests followed inputs from central agencies, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday.
Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, Sarma said, “Today, as per input of central agencies, the Assam Police arrested two persons. One is a retired army jawan but currently working on a contractual basis with the army.” He added, “It has been alleged that they were in touch with Pakistan and were giving information about army movement. We will hand them over to the central agencies.”
The Chief Minister said initial reports indicated that both men had been honey-trapped by those seeking to extract the information. Some reports quoting him stated that the honey-trap was operated through online sex rackets. He said the case would develop further. The identity of the retired jawan has not been disclosed. Senior police officers have not released further details on him, citing the sensitivity of the investigation.
Named accused and the operation
In a separate statement, Assam Police identified one of the accused as Abhishek Kumar Singh, also referred to as Abhishek Kr Singh, a 31-year-old resident of Purba Champaran district in Bihar. He was staying in a rented house in Guwahati.
Police said a preliminary input on the suspect was shared by the Military Intelligence of the Tezpur-based Gajraj Corps. The Special Task Force, working with Sonitpur police, developed the information further. Singh was suspected of anti-national activities under the instructions of a Pakistani intelligence operative, including the passing of secret information concerning security forces.
During the intervening night of October 3 and 4, the STF conducted an operation and apprehended him from a rented house in Gandhinagar under Satgaon police station. A mobile phone, SIM cards and documents described as incriminating were recovered. Further investigation is under way, including the duration of alleged communications with Pakistan-based operatives.
Handover to central agencies
Sarma said both accused would be handed over to central agencies. Police have described the matter as sensitive and have not disclosed the precise nature of the information allegedly shared, the communication method, or the identity of the handler.
The case adds to a series of espionage-related arrests in the Northeast linked to alleged Pakistani intelligence contact, including earlier cases involving defence personnel and civilians accused of sharing movement and deployment-related information. Authorities have not confirmed any operational compromise arising from the present case.
