Agartala, October 1: A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan was found dead after sustaining a gunshot injury from his service rifle while on duty at a border post in West Tripura early on Thursday. Police and BSF authorities have begun an inquiry into the circumstances of the death.
The incident was reported at around 5:45 am near Gate No. 52 of the Tebaria Border Outpost (BOP) under the 42nd Battalion of the BSF. The deceased has been identified as Nagendra Kumar, a resident of Dosod in Rajasthan, who was posted with the 42nd Battalion and was on duty at the post when the incident occurred.
According to preliminary accounts carried by regional reports, Kumar sustained a fatal gunshot injury after a round was fired from his service weapon. Some reports, citing preliminary information, have indicated that the injury may have been self-inflicted. Other accounts state only that a bullet was fired from his service rifle and that he subsequently died of the injury. The circumstances that preceded the firing have not been established.
Police and BSF personnel reached the spot after being informed of the incident and initiated an investigation. Officials are examining the sequence of events before the shooting and other aspects of the death. The body has been taken for necessary legal procedures.
