Jammu, October 7: Constable Rajlakshmi, also reported as Raj Lakshmi, sustained the wound at about 3 pm while posted at BOP Sushil, near the India–Pakistan International Border in the R S Pura sector. Press Trust of India, quoting an official, said the shot came from her own service rifle and that the circumstances remain to be ascertained.
She was given initial treatment at the Sub-District Hospital, R S Pura, and referred to Government Medical College Hospital, Jammu, for specialised care. Local reports state that the bullet struck her in the chest and that she was brought in a critical condition. As of the PTI report filed at 5.30 pm, she was listed as critically injured. No official confirmation of her later condition was available at the time of writing.
An official told PTI: “It is premature to say whether the constable deliberately fired the weapon or whether it was an accidental discharge.” An investigation has been ordered to establish the exact sequence of events.
Dainik Jagran, reporting from R S Pura, identified her as a jawan of the 7th Battalion of the BSF, posted at Sushil Border Post and on duty at the time of the incident. The paper also reported that she is said to be a resident of Tamil Nadu. It stated that the BSF had not issued a formal statement and that security agencies had begun collecting information. These details have not been confirmed in the PTI account.
Available reports do not describe the incident as cross-border firing or as action by Pakistan Rangers. It is being treated as a discharge from the constable’s own weapon at the outpost, with the cause still under inquiry.
R S Pura lies on the International Border in Jammu district and is held by the BSF. The sector has seen ceasefire violations and exchanges of fire in earlier years, including during Operation Sindoor in 2025, but Wednesday’s incident is not being linked by officials to any firing from across the border.
