Officials said on Monday, October 5, 2026, that the arrested public servant is Jay Kumar Singh, a Constable (General Duty) posted at the CBI’s Bank Security and Fraud Branch (BS&FB) in the national capital. He was taken into custody along with a lawyer representing Kolkata-based businessmen. The lawyer’s name has not been disclosed in the available official account.

According to officials, the action followed inputs that Constable Singh, in connivance with a middleman, had demanded illegal gratification of ₹20 lakh from Kolkata businessmen Ram Chandra Daga and his son, Basant Daga, by threatening to implicate them in a case. The amount was later negotiated down to ₹6 lakh.

The CBI placed the constable under surveillance as part of what officials described as the agency’s “zero tolerance” policy towards corruption and its internal counter-graft mechanism. An FIR was registered against six persons, including the constable, the two businessmen, the middleman and others, under provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

As recorded in the CBI FIR, Singh allegedly travelled to Kolkata on September 21, 2026, on what was described as an official visit, and met Ram Chandra Daga. He is alleged to have claimed that he had information about illegal activities by Daga and others. He is also alleged to have met Daga’s lawyer during that visit to discuss the matter. The lawyer subsequently travelled to Delhi “to amicably settle the matter,” officials said.

The agency has further alleged that a West Bengal-based middleman was fully aware of the arrangement and expected a share of the money. At a meeting in a mall in southwest Delhi last week, the constable is alleged to have settled the bribe at ₹6 lakh.

After receiving information about a possible exchange of the bribe, the CBI tracked the movements of those involved. Its Anti-Corruption Unit team moved in on Sunday, October 4, 2026, and arrested the constable and the businessman’s lawyer at the location.

Further details on the recovery of the alleged bribe amount, the identities of the lawyer and the middleman, and the court proceedings were not available in the initial official account. The investigation is continuing.
