New Delhi, October 5: A Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) constable was allegedly attacked with a knife during a protest by the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) in the New Delhi district on Monday, prompting the Delhi Police to register cases and initiate legal action.
Officials identified the injured personnel as Constable Bikram Kumar, who was deployed at the protest site for law-and-order duty. According to police, he was allegedly attacked while taking a protester away from near a barricade. He sustained a minor injury to his right elbow and was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) Hospital for medical examination. Police said the injury was minor; he received treatment and was discharged shortly afterwards.
Speaking to reporters, Constable Bikram Kumar said the attacker appeared to have aimed at his neck. “I was taking the protester from near the barricade, and then he slashed me with the knife. It was intended to slash near my neck, but I was saved, and instead it slashed my hand,” he said, as reported by PTI.
The protest was organised by the NSUI, the student wing of the Congress, which demanded the resignation and arrest of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of irregularities in the electoral process, including the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Protesters staged a symbolic “living dead” demonstration near the NSUI headquarters on Raisina Road and attempted to move towards Jantar Mantar. The agitation was led by NSUI national president Vinod Jakhar. Participants carried placards and raised slogans, including “vote ki chori nahi chalegi, janta ki awaaz nahi dabegi”.
The Delhi Police has registered four First Information Reports (FIRs) in connection with the alleged violence in the Parliament Street area. These relate to the purported attack on the CISF constable, rioting, defacement, and obstruction of public servants in the discharge of their duties. Eighteen people were arrested in connection with the alleged violence and produced before court. The protester accused of attacking the constable was detained, and legal action has been initiated.
Police are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and the role of individual protesters. Officials said necessary legal action would follow the findings of the investigation.
The incident occurred amid heightened security arrangements at public demonstrations in the national capital, where Delhi Police and central forces, including the CISF, are routinely deployed at sensitive locations.
