Vice Admiral Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C), Eastern Naval Command, inaugurated the newly constructed ‘Mahipal Block’, an 11-storey accommodation facility designed to house 661 sailors of the Eastern Fleet, also known as Poorvi Beda. The facility marks a significant step towards improving the living conditions, healthcare facilities and overall welfare of Indian Navy personnel.
Named in honour of Shaurya Chakra awardee Mahipal Yadav, Petty Officer Underwater Instructor (PO UWI), the accommodation complex pays tribute to the courage and distinguished service of the decorated naval sailor.
The newly inaugurated Mahipal Block has been developed to provide modern residential amenities to sailors serving with the Eastern Fleet. The 11-storey building offers improved accommodation infrastructure alongside recreational and wellness facilities designed to enhance the quality of life of naval personnel.
The complex features dedicated dining facilities, a gymnasium, recreation rooms and a library, providing sailors with essential amenities for physical fitness, relaxation, personal development and social interaction.

One of the major highlights of the facility is the Integrated Fleet Health Complex (IFHC), which brings multiple healthcare services together under one roof. The health complex has been designed to provide comprehensive medical support to naval personnel, including general medical care, dental services, emergency healthcare and preventive medical facilities.

The integration of these healthcare services within the accommodation complex is expected to improve accessibility to medical assistance and ensure timely healthcare support for sailors.
The facility reflects the Indian Navy’s continuing emphasis on personnel welfare and the development of modern infrastructure to support operationally deployed forces.

Sailors serving aboard naval warships often undertake extended deployments and demanding operational assignments. Access to comfortable accommodation, recreational amenities and reliable healthcare facilities while ashore plays an important role in maintaining morale, physical fitness and overall operational effectiveness.
The Eastern Fleet, based at Visakhapatnam, forms a crucial component of the Indian Navy’s Eastern Naval Command and plays an important role in safeguarding India’s maritime interests in the Bay of Bengal and the wider Indo-Pacific region.

The inauguration of Mahipal Block reinforces the Navy’s recognition that operational readiness depends not only on advanced warships, weapons and technology but also on the well-being and preparedness of the personnel who operate them.
By combining modern accommodation with integrated healthcare and recreational facilities, the new complex is expected to contribute to improved living standards and greater welfare support for sailors of the Eastern Fleet.

The inauguration of Mahipal Block represents another step in the Indian Navy’s efforts to strengthen the foundations of a battle-ready fleet through improved personnel accommodation, comprehensive healthcare and sustained investment in sailor welfare.
