A state-of-the-art 3D Ophthalmic Microscope (ZEISS ARTEVO 850) equipped with Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) was inaugurated at the Army Hospital (Research & Referral) by Lieutenant General Avinash Das, immediately after assuming charge as Commandant of the apex military medical institution.
A Landmark Step in Military Medical Modernisation
The procurement of this advanced ophthalmic system — the first of its kind in any Government setup in India — represents a major leap forward in the modernisation of the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS). The initiative was undertaken under the visionary leadership of Surgeon Vice Admiral Arti Sarin, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services (DGAFMS).
Revolutionising Surgical Precision and Training
The ZEISS ARTEVO 850 enables heads-up digital surgery, providing surgeons with superior ergonomics and enhanced comfort during long, complex procedures. The integration of real-time intraoperative OCT imaging allows ophthalmic surgeons to visualise microscopic details during surgery, significantly improving precision, safety, and clinical outcomes.

The digital interface also facilitates advanced teaching and training, offering high-definition live visualisation for medical trainees and specialists — a crucial step toward building future-ready surgical teams across AFMS hospitals.
Strengthening the Apex Military Hospital’s Capabilities
Under Lt Gen Avinash Das’s command, the Army Hospital (R&R) continues to evolve as a centre of excellence in healthcare, research, and innovation, combining world-class medical technology with the ethos of service and compassion.

The inauguration of the ARTEVO 850 underscores the hospital’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge medical care to serving personnel, veterans, and their families, while reinforcing AFMS’s position at the forefront of India’s medical advancements.
