Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi on Tuesday announced that the Indian Navy is expected to acquire its first batch of four Rafale fighter jets by 2029. Speaking at the Navy Day press conference, Admiral Tripathi also highlighted that Project 75 India, which involves the acquisition of six advanced submarines, is at an advanced stage, with a formal contract expected to be signed soon.

Operational Highlights and Strategic Impact

Admiral Tripathi detailed the Navy’s role during Operation Sindoor, noting that the aggressive deployment of the carrier battle group compelled the Pakistan Navy to remain close to their ports and along the Makran coast, underscoring India’s maritime deterrence capability.

Since the previous Navy Day, the Navy has achieved over 11,000 ship days and 50,000 flying hours, reflecting sustained operational readiness. Anti-piracy operations remain a key focus, with one ship continuously deployed in the Gulf of Aden since 2008. To date, 138 ships have escorted over 3,700 merchant vessels, and since November 23, 62 pirates have been apprehended amid increased regional threats, particularly from non-state actors such as the Houthis.

Anti-Narcotic Operations

Highlighting the Navy’s contribution to national security beyond conventional defence, Admiral Tripathi revealed that naval units, in coordination with other agencies, seized contraband worth ₹43,300 crore in anti-narcotic operations over the past year, showcasing the Navy’s multifaceted operational role.

Strategic Outlook

The acquisition of Rafale jets and advanced submarines, alongside continuous deployments and counter-threat operations, reflects the Indian Navy’s commitment to strengthening maritime security, enhancing deterrence, and projecting power in key strategic regions.
