The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has developed a compact, portable water purification system to meet the critical drinking water needs of troops deployed in remote, high-altitude, and coastal regions.

The system, called the Sea Water Desalination System (SWaDeS), has been developed by DRDO’s Defence Laboratory, Jodhpur, in response to operational requirements from the Army, Navy, and Air Force. It is designed to convert saline seawater and brackish water into potable drinking water during extended field deployments where fresh water sources are scarce or unavailable.

Dual-Mode System for Field Operations

SWaDeS is available in both manual and engine-operated variants, offering flexibility across diverse operational environments:

  • Manual Variant:
Lightweight and hand-operated, the manual version can be carried by a single soldier. It is intended for emergency situations such as long-range patrols or power-scarce areas and can generate sufficient potable water to support 10–12 personnel.
  • Engine-Operated Variant:
This higher-capacity system can desalinate seawater with total dissolved solids (TDS) levels of up to 35,000 mg/L, reducing it to below 500 mg/L, which meets drinking water standards. It can be deployed within 2–3 minutes and can meet the daily drinking water needs of 20–25 soldiers.

Both variants have successfully completed Acceptance Test Procedures (ATP), confirming their reliability and suitability for military use.

Operational Relevance Across Terrains

SWaDeS has proven effective in a wide range of operational scenarios, including naval missions, coastal bases, and inland saline water bodies such as Pangong Tso in Ladakh. Its dual-mode design ensures usability from deserts and high-altitude regions to maritime environments, significantly enhancing troop endurance and self-sustainment.

Broader DRDO Water Security Initiatives

The development of SWaDeS is part of DRDO’s wider focus on water security for armed forces. Other systems include:

  • CBRN Water Purification System Mk-II, capable of treating contaminated water in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear environments.
  • Backpack-portable membrane-based purifiers suitable for sub-zero conditions in areas like Siachen and Ladakh.
  • Emergency Sea Water Purification Kits (ESWPK) for naval aviation, life rafts, and special operations.
  • High-altitude RO units, over 100 of which have already been deployed in Ladakh since 2022.

Strategic and Civilian Potential

While designed primarily for military use, SWaDeS also holds strong potential for civilian applications in water-stressed coastal and island regions, aligning with the national vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat and indigenous technology development.

The induction of systems like SWaDeS strengthens India’s operational resilience in water-scarce frontiers and underscores DRDO’s role in delivering life-support technologies that directly enhance soldier survivability and mission effectiveness.
