New Delhi, January 30, 2026 – In a ceremony recognizing the invaluable contributions of non-human members of the Indian Army, Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi felicitated two Bactrian camels, two Zanskari ponies, and two Army dogs for their outstanding performance in extreme operational environments. These animals have played critical roles in supporting troops across challenging terrains, from the cold deserts of Ladakh to the icy heights of the Siachen Glacier.
The Bactrian camels, deployed in Ladakh’s arid and high-altitude regions, have been essential for logistics operations, transporting heavy loads over steep gradients and rugged landscapes where mechanized vehicles are often impractical. Their endurance in sub-zero temperatures has ensured sustained supply lines for forward-deployed units.
Similarly, the Zanskari ponies, an indigenous and endangered breed native to the Himalayan region, have provided steadfast support in the Siachen Glacier and other forward areas. These hardy animals have assisted in patrolling and carrying equipment in conditions marked by extreme cold and limited accessibility.
The Army dogs, trained for specialized tasks including surveillance, tracking, and detection, have enhanced operational effectiveness by safeguarding personnel and identifying potential threats across diverse terrains. Their loyalty and acute senses have proven indispensable in maintaining security in hostile environments.
General Dwivedi emphasized the animals’ role in standing shoulder to shoulder with soldiers, highlighting their bravery and dedication to national service. This felicitation underscores the Indian Army’s commitment to acknowledging all contributors to its missions, including these unsung heroes.
