Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently reiterated that India is moving ahead with a series of “future-ready” trade agreements, positioning itself as a trusted and stabilising global partner. He noted that recent agreements with major economic blocs and countries, including the European Union and the United States, have drawn international attention for their potential to support global economic resilience and stability.

Modi described these accords as part of India’s commitment to constructive engagement that goes beyond traditional bilateral relationships, aligning economic diplomacy with broader strategic objectives.

High-Level India–Greece Defence Dialogue

Against this backdrop, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar hosted Nikos Dendias, Greece’s Minister of National Defence, in New Delhi for detailed discussions on strategic and security issues. Dendias was visiting India at the invitation of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

Jaishankar welcomed his Greek counterpart and highlighted the depth of the discussions, which covered regional and international security developments and the growing scope of bilateral cooperation. Officials said the dialogue reflected shared interests in stability across the Indo-Pacific and the wider Mediterranean region.

Defence-Industrial Cooperation in Focus

During his visit, Dendias underlined Greece’s interest in exploring defence-industrial cooperation with India. He pointed to opportunities for collaboration between the Greek defence industry and Indian manufacturers, suggesting a shared agenda to strengthen capabilities through industrial partnerships, technology exchange and joint initiatives.

The Greek minister also participated in engagements linked to the India–EU Forum, reinforcing Athens’ interest in closer coordination with New Delhi within the broader European context.

Trade, Security and Strategic Alignment

The discussions come shortly after the signing of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement, which Modi described as a milestone in India’s efforts to build resilient trade networks and reinforce its role as a reliable international partner. The agreement is seen as complementing India’s broader strategy of integrating economic cooperation with security and strategic alignment.

Analysts note that the India–Greece engagement reflects a gradual but deliberate shift in India’s foreign policy—one that places emphasis on cooperative security, defence-industrial collaboration and robust trade linkages as mutually reinforcing pillars of long-term partnerships.

The talks highlight India’s intent to work closely with like-minded countries to promote stability in an increasingly complex global environment, while advancing both strategic interests and economic growth.
