The Government of India has announced lifelong complimentary railway travel for recipients of Sena Medal (Gallantry), Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry) and Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry) on Indian Railways, marking a major welfare initiative for Armed Forces personnel.
Key Features of the Scheme
Under the new order:
- Awardees will get free lifelong travel in First Class, 2 AC and AC Chair Car
- Each recipient can travel with one companion free of cost
Benefits Extended to Families
The scheme also covers:
- Spouses (widows/widowers) – valid until remarriage
- Parents of unmarried posthumous awardees
Honouring Bravery and Sacrifice
The decision recognises the valour and sacrifices of gallantry award winners, ensuring continued support and dignity for them and their families.
Railways–Army “Framework of Cooperation” for Ex-Servicemen
Alongside the concession, Indian Railways has introduced a “Framework of Cooperation” with the Army to enhance post-retirement employment opportunities.
Key Highlights
- 10% reservation in Level-2 and above posts for ex-servicemen
- 20% reservation in Level-1 posts for ex-servicemen
- 5–10% reservation for retired Agniveers
- Nearly 14,788 posts reserved in 2024–25
Additionally, over 5,000 Level-1 posts are under process, with multiple railway divisions signing MoUs with Army units to fast-track recruitment.
Supporting Transition to Civil Life
The initiative aims to:
- Facilitate smooth transition to civilian careers
- Increase awareness of job opportunities
- Build a structured support ecosystem for veterans and Agniveers
