New Delhi, March 28, 2026 — In a landmark decision honouring the exceptional bravery of India’s armed forces personnel, the Government of India has approved lifelong complimentary railway travel for recipients of the Sena Medal (Gallantry), Nau Sena Medal (Gallantry) and Vayu Sena Medal (Gallantry). The facility extends to eligible family members and includes one companion, marking a significant welfare measure that aligns these awardees with beneficiaries of the nation’s highest gallantry honours.

The official order, issued by the Ministry of Railways in consultation with the Ministry of Defence (MoD), entitles awardees to free travel in First Class, Second AC (2AC) and AC Chair Car classes on all Indian Railways trains. Each beneficiary may be accompanied by one companion, who will also travel without charge. The concession is valid for the lifetime of the awardee and, where applicable, covers spouses (widows or widowers until remarriage) and the parents of unmarried posthumous awardees. Defence officials confirmed the details to news agency ANI, emphasising that the benefit applies exclusively to medals awarded for gallantry and not for distinguished service.

An official communication dated March 16, 2026, noted that the proposal was taken up with the MoD, which subsequently approved the complimentary lifelong travel for the awardees, their dependents and one companion. The Adjutant General’s branch, in coordination with the Controller General of Defence Accounts, is finalising the modalities for implementation, which will be notified shortly.

This initiative brings recipients of the Sena, Nau Sena and Vayu Sena Medals (Gallantry) — which rank immediately below the Shaurya Chakra in the order of precedence — on par with holders of higher gallantry awards such as the Param Vir Chakra, Maha Vir Chakra, Vir Chakra, Ashoka Chakra, Kirti Chakra and Shaurya Chakra, who already enjoy similar railway concessions. The move underscores the government’s commitment to recognising the sacrifices of uniformed personnel across the Army, Navy and Air Force, irrespective of whether the acts of valour occurred in peacetime or wartime operations.

Gallantry awards in the Indian armed forces are conferred for acts of conspicuous bravery, leadership under fire or exceptional courage in the face of the enemy or during counter-insurgency and anti-terrorist operations. The Sena Medal (Gallantry), instituted in 1960, is among the most frequently awarded for such distinguished service in the line of duty. The corresponding naval and air force equivalents — Nau Sena Medal and Vayu Sena Medal — carry identical prestige within their respective services.

The decision has been widely welcomed as a tangible expression of national gratitude. By providing unrestricted access to premium rail travel, the government aims to ease the mobility of these heroes and their families, allowing them to traverse the country with dignity and comfort. The concession is expected to benefit hundreds of serving and retired personnel, as well as the families of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As implementation details are finalised, Indian Railways will issue appropriate instructions to all zones and divisions to ensure seamless facilitation at booking counters and during journeys. This policy forms part of a broader spectrum of welfare initiatives for ex-servicemen, including employment opportunities for Agniveers and reserved posts in various public sector undertakings.

The Government of India’s announcement reaffirms its resolve to uphold the dignity and well-being of those who safeguard the nation’s sovereignty, ensuring that their valour is remembered not only in medals and citations but also through enduring privileges that reflect the country’s profound respect.
