Growing up in the rugged Himalayan terrain, he was exposed early to a lifestyle that demanded resilience, discipline, and determination.

He was raised in a modest yet value-driven household. His father, Shailendra Nautiyal, is a teacher and a socially active individual in the local community. While detailed public information about his schooling and pre-commission training remains limited, his journey reflects the path of many young Indians from humble beginnings who rise through sheer dedication and focus.

Military Career in the Indian Air Force

Squadron Leader Nautiyal was commissioned into the Indian Air Force on 14 December 2013 through the 10 SSC (M) FP Course in the Flying (Pilot) branch. Over the years, he has steadily risen through the ranks, reflecting consistent performance and professional competence.

He was promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant on 14 March 2016 and later to Squadron Leader on 14 December 2019. During his service, he has been associated with No. 48 Squadron of the IAF, a frontline unit known for its operational readiness and strategic importance.

Although detailed operational records are not publicly disclosed due to security protocols, his career trajectory indicates a strong foundation in flying operations and mission execution.

Role in Operation Sindoor (2025)

In 2025, Squadron Leader Nautiyal played an important role in Operation Sindoor, a significant air operation conducted by the Indian Air Force in response to a major terrorist incident. The operation involved precision strikes on terrorist infrastructure across the border, showcasing India’s capability for swift and decisive aerial response.

During this high-stakes mission, he demonstrated exceptional composure, precision, and professional excellence. Reports highlight his ability to operate effectively under pressure, maintain mission focus, and contribute to the successful execution of objectives. His actions were part of a coordinated effort that ensured both operational success and national security.

Recognition and Awards

For his outstanding contribution during Operation Sindoor, Squadron Leader Nautiyal was awarded a Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Commendation Letter (Prashansa Patra) by General Anil Chauhan.

The honour was announced on Independence Day, 15 August 2025, in New Delhi. The citation praised his “exceptional dedication, courage, and efficiency,” noting that his conduct upheld the highest traditions of the Indian Armed Forces.

Commendation Letter

While not a gallantry medal like the Vir Chakra, the CDS Commendation is a prestigious recognition of distinguished service and professional excellence within the military hierarchy.

Inspirational Journey

Squadron Leader Nautiyal’s story is one of perseverance and purpose. From a small village in Uttarkashi to flying operational missions for the nation, his journey reflects the possibilities that open up through discipline, commitment, and a clear sense of duty.

His achievements have been widely celebrated in his home district and across Uttarakhand, often referred to as “Veerbhumi” for its rich legacy of military service. For many young aspirants, especially from rural backgrounds, his journey serves as a powerful reminder that determination and hard work can overcome any limitation.

Conclusion

Despite limited public information—largely due to operational security norms—Squadron Leader Abhinav Nautiyal stands out as a dedicated and courageous officer of the Indian Air Force. His contribution during Operation Sindoor and the recognition he received from the Chief of Defence Staff underline his professionalism and commitment to the nation.
