Air Marshal JS Mann, AVSM, VM, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief (AOC-in-C) of the Indian Air Force’s Southern Air Command, visited Air Force Station Sulur to review the operational preparedness of combat units tasked with safeguarding Peninsular India and the strategically significant Indian Ocean Region (IOR). The visit highlighted the Indian Air Force’s continued emphasis on maintaining a high state of combat readiness while advancing indigenous aerospace capabilities under the vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat.
During his visit, Air Marshal Mann assessed the operational capabilities and preparedness of frontline combat units responsible for ensuring air defence and supporting India’s broader strategic interests across the southern theatre. Air Force Station Sulur remains one of the Indian Air Force’s most important operational bases, playing a vital role in protecting India’s extensive maritime frontiers and supporting missions across the Indian Ocean Region.
The Southern Air Command has a critical responsibility in securing India’s southern airspace and maritime approaches, extending operational support across a vast geographical area that includes vital sea lanes of communication and strategic maritime assets. Given the increasing strategic importance of the Indian Ocean Region, maintaining operational readiness and rapid response capabilities remains central to the command’s mission objectives.

A major highlight of the visit was Air Marshal Mann’s participation in a combat interception mission aboard the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. By flying the mission himself, the Southern Air Command chief reaffirmed the Indian Air Force’s confidence in India’s indigenous aerospace capabilities and underscored the growing maturity of the country’s defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The LCA Tejas represents one of India’s most significant indigenous defence achievements and continues to play an increasingly important role in strengthening the operational capabilities of the Indian Air Force. Designed to undertake air defence, interception and offensive missions, the platform embodies India’s progress towards achieving greater self-reliance in advanced military technologies. Air Marshal Mann’s combat mission in the aircraft symbolised the Indian Air Force’s commitment to embracing indigenous solutions for future operational requirements.
The visit also highlighted the decisive role of air power in maintaining maritime dominance and ensuring regional stability across the Indian Ocean Region. Modern air capabilities provide the flexibility required for a broad spectrum of operations, including air defence, maritime surveillance, rapid force projection, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and strategic deterrence. The Indian Air Force’s operational integration with India’s maritime security architecture remains a crucial component of safeguarding national interests in the region.

Air Marshal Mann emphasised the importance of maintaining high operational standards among combat units while continuously adapting to evolving security challenges. The dynamic strategic environment of the Indian Ocean Region necessitates sustained investments in operational preparedness, technological advancement and indigenous capability development to preserve India’s strategic advantages and enhance deterrence capabilities.
The Southern Air Command continues to play a pivotal role in supporting India’s maritime security objectives through sustained vigilance and operational excellence. Its combat units remain prepared to respond effectively to conventional and emerging threats while contributing to joint operational capabilities alongside other services of the armed forces.
The visit reaffirmed the Indian Air Force’s commitment to strengthening both operational readiness and indigenous aerospace development as twin pillars of national security. By combining cutting-edge indigenous platforms such as the LCA Tejas with highly trained personnel and mission-ready combat formations, the Indian Air Force continues to enhance its ability to protect India’s strategic interests across Peninsular India and the wider Indian Ocean Region.

Air Marshal JS Mann’s visit to Air Force Station Sulur serves as a reflection of the Indian Air Force’s focus on building a technologically advanced, combat-ready and self-reliant force capable of ensuring deterrence, maintaining regional stability and safeguarding the nation’s maritime and strategic interests in an increasingly complex security environment.
