Held over two days, the colloquium served as a significant platform for Deputy Judge Advocate Generals (DJAGs) from various formations under Eastern Command to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss legal developments affecting military operations and administration. The event was organised around the central theme, “Evolution of Military Law and Legal Challenges Ahead.”

The discussions reflected the Indian Army’s commitment to ensuring that its legal framework remains aligned with rapidly changing operational realities, technological advancements, and contemporary jurisprudence. Participants examined a wide range of subjects, including military justice, human rights, cybercrime, artificial intelligence (AI), digital evidence, and other emerging legal issues that are increasingly influencing the military domain.

As armed forces across the world integrate advanced technologies into operational planning and decision-making, the role of military legal experts has become increasingly important. The colloquium explored how evolving technologies such as AI and digital forensic tools are reshaping investigations, evidence collection, and legal procedures, while also addressing the legal and ethical implications associated with their use.

Cybercrime and digital security also featured prominently in the deliberations, with participants discussing the growing need to strengthen legal preparedness against cyber threats targeting military networks and critical infrastructure. The exchange of views highlighted the importance of continuously updating legal policies and procedures to remain effective in an increasingly technology-driven security environment.

The event was attended by Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, Chief of Staff, Headquarters Eastern Command, and Major General Balendu Singh Negi, Judge Advocate General of the Indian Army. Addressing the gathering, both senior officers emphasised the importance of a robust, adaptive, and future-ready military justice system capable of responding effectively to the changing nature of warfare and the legal complexities arising from new technologies and evolving security challenges.

Their addresses underscored the need for continuous professional development among military legal officers and highlighted the JAG Branch’s crucial role in upholding discipline, ensuring the rule of law, protecting institutional integrity, and providing sound legal guidance to commanders at every level.

The successful conduct of the JAG Departmental Colloquium 2026 reaffirmed the Indian Army’s commitment to strengthening its military justice framework through continuous legal education, collaborative discussions, and proactive engagement with emerging legal issues. By fostering dialogue on contemporary challenges, the event reinforced the importance of maintaining a modern and resilient legal system capable of supporting operational effectiveness while upholding the highest standards of justice and accountability.
