The initiative aimed to provide essential veterinary healthcare and preventive treatment to livestock, which serves as the primary source of livelihood for many families living in the high-altitude region. The camps offered medical examinations, disease prevention measures, and treatment for sheep, goats, and other domesticated animals that are central to the local pastoral economy.

Changthang, known for its harsh terrain and extreme climatic conditions, is home to communities that depend heavily on livestock rearing for their sustenance and income. Animals such as sheep, goats, yaks, and the famed Changthangi goats, which produce the world-renowned Pashmina wool, play a crucial role in supporting the region’s economy. Ensuring the health of these animals is therefore essential for the well-being and financial security of the local population.

Veterinary teams from the Indian Army worked closely with specialists from the Animal Husbandry Department to deliver coordinated healthcare services. The collaboration ensured that livestock received timely medical attention, vaccinations, and preventive care to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and improve overall animal health.

Beyond providing veterinary assistance, the initiative highlighted the strong partnership between the Indian Army, the Civil Administration, and the people of Ladakh. Such outreach programmes have become an important aspect of the Army’s engagement with remote border communities, complementing its primary role of safeguarding the nation’s frontiers while contributing to local development and welfare.

The camps also reflected the Indian Army’s continued efforts to build trust and strengthen civil-military relations in strategically important border regions. By addressing the needs of local communities and supporting their traditional livelihoods, the Army continues to play a significant role in fostering resilience and improving the quality of life in some of India’s most challenging terrains.
