New Delhi, July 28: A delegation comprising 46 students, including three faculty members, from the Army Law College, Pune, visited the Institute of Military Law (IML), New Delhi, on July 27, 2026, as part of an educational initiative aimed at familiarising aspiring legal professionals with the military justice system and the legal framework of the Indian Army.
During the visit, the delegation received comprehensive briefings on the functioning of the Institute of Military Law, the role and responsibilities of the Judge Advocate General (JAG) Branch, and the diverse legal career opportunities available within the Indian Army. The interactive sessions provided students with valuable insights into the unique legal environment of the Armed Forces, where military law operates alongside the country’s civil legal system.
Officials from the Institute explained the crucial role of the JAG Branch in advising military commanders on legal matters, administering military justice, ensuring compliance with military laws and regulations, and supporting disciplinary and operational legal processes. Students were also introduced to the professional responsibilities of military legal officers and the pathways to joining the Indian Army as officers in the JAG Branch.
The educational visit included a guided tour of the Institute’s state-of-the-art training infrastructure. One of the highlights was the Brigadier Justice D.M. Sen Library, which houses an extensive collection of legal literature, military law references, and research material that supports the training of military legal professionals.
The delegation also visited the Moot Court Martial Hall, where students were briefed on the procedures, practices, and nuances of the Military Justice System. The facility provides realistic courtroom simulations that help train officers in the conduct of court martial proceedings and other military legal processes. Through these demonstrations, students gained a practical understanding of how military justice is administered within the Armed Forces.
The Institute of Military Law serves as the premier training establishment for military legal education in India. It plays a vital role in preparing officers of the Judge Advocate General Branch and other military personnel in legal disciplines related to operational law, military justice, international humanitarian law, administrative law, and other specialised areas essential to the functioning of the Armed Forces.
For the students of Army Law College, the visit offered an opportunity to bridge academic legal studies with the practical application of military law. Interactions with experienced officers and legal experts helped them better appreciate the unique challenges and responsibilities associated with providing legal support to military operations and administration.
