Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Dhiraj Seth on Thursday launched the Xtreme Weather Grade (XWG) Diesel, an indigenous fuel innovation jointly developed by the Indian Army and Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) to significantly enhance the operational capabilities of military vehicles deployed in some of the world’s harshest environments. The specialised diesel has been engineered to remain fully functional at temperatures as low as minus 42 degrees Celsius, ensuring reliable mobility and mission readiness in high-altitude and extreme winter regions.
The launch marks a major milestone in India’s defence innovation ecosystem and aligns with the Government’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by developing indigenous technological solutions tailored to the unique operational requirements of the armed forces.
Designed specifically for deployment in high-altitude terrain such as Ladakh, Siachen Glacier and other snow-bound forward areas, XWG Diesel addresses one of the most critical challenges faced by military vehicles operating in sub-zero temperatures—fuel waxing and gelling. Conventional diesel tends to form wax crystals under extreme cold, restricting fuel flow and potentially rendering engines inoperable. The newly developed fuel overcomes this limitation by maintaining its fluidity even at temperatures as low as -42°C, thereby ensuring uninterrupted engine performance.

The enhanced low-temperature characteristics of XWG Diesel will improve the operational availability of both combat and logistics vehicles deployed in challenging mountainous regions. Reliable fuel performance directly contributes to faster mobilisation, sustained logistics support and greater operational flexibility, all of which are critical during military operations in high-altitude areas where weather conditions often pose significant challenges.
An important advantage of the new fuel is its seamless compatibility with the Indian Army’s existing vehicle fleet. XWG Diesel fully complies with BS-VI emission norms as well as the IS 1460:2025 fuel quality standards, enabling its immediate adoption without requiring engine modifications, vehicle redesign or re-homologation. This allows the Army to integrate the specialised fuel across its current inventory efficiently while minimising implementation costs and logistical complexities.

The indigenous fuel was developed through close collaboration between the Indian Army and India’s Oil Marketing Companies, demonstrating the growing synergy between the defence establishment and the country’s energy sector in addressing specialised military requirements. Such collaborative innovation is increasingly becoming a cornerstone of India’s defence modernisation strategy, enabling the development of customised technologies suited to the country’s unique operational environment.
Beyond its military applications, XWG Diesel also holds significant potential for civilian use. Remote Himalayan regions, border villages, disaster response agencies, infrastructure projects and commercial transport operating in severe winter conditions could benefit from the fuel’s ability to function reliably under extremely low temperatures. The technology is expected to improve transportation reliability and support economic activities in high-altitude regions that frequently experience prolonged sub-zero conditions.
The development of XWG Diesel comes at a time when the Indian Armed Forces continue to strengthen their infrastructure and operational capabilities in high-altitude sectors, particularly following increased deployments along the northern borders. Maintaining dependable mobility for troop carriers, logistics vehicles, engineering equipment and specialised military platforms remains a critical requirement for sustaining operational readiness throughout the year.

Over the past few years, the Indian Army has increasingly focused on indigenous research and development to overcome operational challenges unique to India’s geography. From specialised clothing and equipment for extreme climates to advanced surveillance systems, mobility platforms and logistics solutions, domestically developed technologies are playing an increasingly important role in enhancing battlefield effectiveness while reducing dependence on foreign suppliers.
The launch of Xtreme Weather Grade Diesel represents another important step in this journey. By providing a reliable, indigenous fuel solution capable of supporting operations in some of the world’s harshest climatic conditions, the Indian Army has strengthened its ability to maintain continuous operational readiness while simultaneously advancing India’s self-reliance in defence technology.
