Operation Sindoor’s Air Operations Leader Air Marshal A.K. Bharti Bids Farewell with Tribute at National War Memorial

Deputy Chief of the Air Staff honours the nation's Bravehearts after an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades in the Indian Air Force.

Air Marshal Awadhesh Kumar (A.K.) Bharti, SYSM, AVSM, VM, Deputy Chief of the Air Staff (DCAS), paid homage to the nation’s fallen heroes at the National War Memorial in New Delhi in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony on the occasion of his superannuation, marking the conclusion of an illustrious career spanning nearly four decades in the Indian Air Force (IAF).

Expressing his deep respect and gratitude for the Bravehearts who made the supreme sacrifice in the service of the nation, Air Marshal Bharti laid a wreath at the National War Memorial, honouring generations of Indian Armed Forces personnel who laid down their lives in the line of duty. The ceremony reflected the Indian Air Force’s enduring tradition of remembering and paying tribute to those who have safeguarded the nation’s sovereignty with courage and selfless devotion.

Commissioned into the fighter stream of the Indian Air Force on 13 June 1987, Air Marshal Bharti built a distinguished career as one of the service’s most accomplished fighter pilots and operational commanders. An alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) and the National Defence College (NDC), he combined exceptional operational experience with strategic leadership throughout his military service.

Recognised as a Fighter Combat Leader, Air Marshal Bharti commanded several key operational formations during his career. He served as the Flight Commander of a Sukhoi Su-30MKI squadron before taking command of the prestigious No. 30 Squadron, playing a vital role in operationalising one of the Indian Air Force’s frontline air superiority platforms. He later commanded 2 Wing at Lohegaon, served as the Senior Air Staff Officer at Central Air Command, and subsequently held the important appointment of Director General of Air Operations (DGAO).

As Director General of Air Operations, Air Marshal Bharti played a significant role in enhancing the Indian Air Force’s operational preparedness, doctrinal evolution and combat capability. His tenure witnessed continued efforts towards integrating advanced weapon systems, refining operational concepts and strengthening India’s air power in an increasingly dynamic security environment.

On 1 June 2025, he assumed the appointment of Deputy Chief of the Air Staff, one of the senior-most positions at Air Headquarters. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing strategic planning, force modernisation, operational preparedness and capability development, contributing significantly to the Indian Air Force’s transformation into a technologically advanced and future-ready aerospace force.

Throughout his career, Air Marshal Bharti was closely associated with major operational exercises, including Exercise Gagan Shakti, as well as international air exercises such as Exercise Indradhanush with the Royal Air Force and Exercise Garuda with the French Air and Space Force. Under his leadership, operational units consistently achieved outstanding performance and maintained exceptional standards of flying safety and combat readiness.

His distinguished service has been recognised through several prestigious honours, including the Sarvottam Yudh Seva Medal (SYSM), Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and Vayu Sena Medal (VM), reflecting his outstanding contribution to operational excellence, leadership and national security. During his flying career, he also earned commendations from the Chief of Air Staff and maintained an exemplary safety record while operating frontline fighter aircraft.

Beyond his operational achievements, Air Marshal Bharti has been widely acknowledged for his contribution to the evolution of Indian air power doctrine and the development of future military leadership. His emphasis on innovation, combat preparedness and technological advancement has played a key role in strengthening the Indian Air Force’s ability to meet emerging security challenges.

The wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial marked a fitting conclusion to a distinguished military career dedicated to safeguarding India’s skies. By paying tribute to the nation’s fallen soldiers on his final day in uniform, Air Marshal A.K. Bharti reaffirmed the enduring values of sacrifice, service and honour that define the Indian Armed Forces.

As he retires from active service, Air Marshal Bharti leaves behind a legacy of operational excellence, strategic vision and exemplary leadership that has made a lasting contribution to the Indian Air Force and the nation’s defence preparedness.
