Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti, UYSM, AVSM, VSM, superannuated from the Indian Navy on 31 July 2026, bringing to a close an illustrious military career spanning more than 38 years. One of the Navy’s most accomplished Flag Officers, he retired after serving as the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS), leaving behind a legacy of operational excellence, strategic vision and exemplary leadership.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on 1 July 1988, Vice Admiral Sobti was a Navigation and Direction Specialist and an alumnus of the National Defence Academy (NDA), where he graduated with the President’s Gold Medal for standing first in the overall order of merit. He further enhanced his professional military education at the Collège Interarmées de Défense in Paris and the College of Naval Warfare in Mumbai, where he received the Chief of Naval Staff Gold Medal for the Best Operational Paper during the Naval Higher Command Course.
Throughout his distinguished career, Vice Admiral Sobti held several important operational appointments at sea. He served as the Navigating Officer of INS Kirpan and was part of the commissioning crew of the Delhi-class guided missile destroyer INS Mysore. He later served aboard the aircraft carrier INS Viraat as Direction Officer and as Executive Officer of INS Delhi.
As a commanding officer, he led the Veer-class missile vessel INS Nishank, the Kora-class corvette INS Kora, and achieved a historic milestone by becoming the Commissioning Commanding Officer of the indigenous Kolkata-class guided missile destroyer INS Kolkata, which was commissioned into the Indian Navy in August 2014. Commanding India’s first indigenously built stealth destroyer represented one of the defining moments of his operational career.
His staff and diplomatic appointments were equally distinguished. He served in important roles at Naval Headquarters, including Joint Director of Staff Requirements and Joint Director of Personnel, while also representing India overseas as the Naval Attaché at the Embassy of India in Moscow.
Following his promotion to Flag Rank, Vice Admiral Sobti assumed charge as the Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor of the Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala, where he contributed significantly to shaping the next generation of Indian naval officers. He was later appointed Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet, commanding one of the Indian Navy’s premier operational fleets.
Under his leadership, the Eastern Fleet successfully executed Operation Samudra Setu II, which transported critical medical oxygen supplies during the COVID-19 pandemic, and Operation Sagar, India’s maritime humanitarian assistance mission to friendly countries across the Indian Ocean Region. The fleet also participated in the multinational Exercise Malabar 2021 in the Western Pacific, strengthening interoperability with partner navies.
On promotion to the rank of Vice Admiral, he assumed charge as the Director General Project Seabird, overseeing the expansion of the strategically important Karwar Naval Base, one of India’s largest and most significant naval infrastructure projects.
On 1 October 2023, Vice Admiral Sobti took over as the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff, becoming one of the Indian Navy’s senior-most operational leaders. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in force modernisation, operational planning and strategic maritime preparedness.
Most notably, Vice Admiral Sobti served as the Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff during Operation Sindoor, contributing significantly to the Indian Navy’s operational readiness, maritime deployment and strategic coordination during one of India’s most important recent military operations. In recognition of his distinguished operational leadership during the operation, he was awarded the prestigious Uttam Yudh Seva Medal (UYSM).
His long and distinguished service has also been recognised through the award of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) and the Vishisht Seva Medal (VSM), reflecting sustained excellence in command, leadership and operational achievement.
Over a career spanning nearly four decades, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti commanded frontline warships, led major operational fleets, strengthened India’s maritime capabilities, contributed to officer training and played an instrumental role in the expansion of indigenous naval infrastructure. His leadership during humanitarian operations, multinational exercises and Operation Sindoor further cemented his reputation as one of the Indian Navy’s most accomplished Flag Officers.
As he retires from active service, Vice Admiral Tarun Sobti leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, operational excellence and unwavering dedication to the nation. His contributions have strengthened the Indian Navy’s operational capability, leadership culture and maritime preparedness, inspiring future generations of naval officers committed to safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
