The Indian Navy has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (Banaras Hindu University), Varanasi, to strengthen collaboration in defence research, technology development and the indigenisation of advanced naval technologies. The partnership is aimed at combining academic excellence with operational expertise to accelerate innovation in the maritime domain.
The agreement was signed at the Naval Headquarters in New Delhi by Vice Admiral B. Sivakumar, AVSM, VSM, Controller of Personnel Services (COM), Indian Navy, and Professor Rajesh Kumar, Dean (Research and Development), IIT (BHU), in the presence of senior officials from both organisations.
According to the Indian Navy, the collaboration seeks to bring together the institute’s research capabilities and the Navy’s operational requirements to jointly develop indigenous technologies for future maritime applications. The partnership reflects the growing emphasis on strengthening the link between academia and the defence sector to address evolving technological and security challenges.
Under the MoU, both institutions will undertake collaborative research projects, technology development programmes and academic engagements across multiple areas of strategic importance. The agreement also provides for faculty interactions, student participation, capacity-building initiatives and knowledge exchange aimed at advancing research in cutting-edge naval technologies.
The collaboration is expected to create valuable opportunities for IIT (BHU) students, researchers and faculty members to contribute to defence-oriented projects while gaining exposure to real-world technological challenges faced by the Indian Navy. At the same time, the Navy will benefit from access to academic expertise, innovative research and emerging technologies developed within one of the country’s premier engineering institutions.
Officials stated that the partnership aligns closely with the Government of India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat by promoting indigenous research, encouraging technological innovation and reducing dependence on foreign defence technologies. The initiative is expected to contribute towards the development of home-grown solutions for the country’s maritime security and naval modernisation programmes.
The Indian Navy has increasingly expanded its engagement with leading academic institutions, research organisations and technology partners to build a robust ecosystem for indigenous defence innovation. Such collaborations are intended to accelerate the development of next-generation technologies in areas including artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, advanced materials, cybersecurity, underwater systems and maritime engineering.
Alongside the signing of the research agreement, IIT (BHU), Varanasi also inaugurated its Heritage Park, highlighting the institute’s rich academic legacy and historical contribution to engineering education and scientific research in India. The inauguration reflects the institution’s commitment to preserving its heritage while continuing to foster innovation and excellence in higher education.
The MoU marks another significant step in strengthening cooperation between India’s defence establishment and premier academic institutions. By integrating research, education and operational expertise, the partnership is expected to contribute to the development of advanced indigenous naval technologies while supporting the long-term goals of defence self-reliance and maritime capability enhancement.
