Reliance Industries Limited and Rolls-Royce have announced a strategic intent to partner on the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of a sovereign indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme, marking a significant development in the country’s efforts to achieve self-reliance in advanced military propulsion technology.
The announcement, made on August 14, 2026, envisages combining Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion and engineering with Reliance’s capabilities in technology, manufacturing, scale and project execution. The proposed partnership is aimed at developing critical aero-engine capabilities within India.
As part of the proposed collaboration, the two companies will explore establishing a dedicated Aero Gas Turbine Complex in India. The facility is expected to function as a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technologies and could support activities spanning the design, development, manufacturing, testing and production of advanced aero-engines.
Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries Limited, said the company’s strategic focus is on building sovereign capabilities in critical technologies. He said the proposed partnership would combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s industrial and manufacturing capabilities to establish an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India.
Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic welcomed the proposed collaboration and said the company would bring its experience in advanced engineering and power technologies together with Reliance’s industrial capabilities. The partnership, according to Rolls-Royce, could contribute to the development of a stronger and more self-reliant aerospace ecosystem in India.
The proposed engine programme is particularly significant for the AMCA, India’s next-generation stealth fighter aircraft programme. Developing a high-performance indigenous combat engine would address one of the most challenging areas of advanced military aviation and could reduce dependence on foreign propulsion technologies.
The proposed Aero Gas Turbine Complex would seek to build capabilities across the complete propulsion ecosystem, including research and development, engineering, manufacturing, testing and production. Such capabilities could also create a broader industrial base involving Indian component manufacturers, technology companies and aerospace suppliers.
The initiative aligns with India’s broader push towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat in defence and aerospace, with indigenous propulsion identified as a critical requirement for achieving greater technological sovereignty in combat aviation.
If realised, the Reliance-Rolls-Royce partnership could represent an important step towards establishing a domestic ecosystem capable of supporting advanced aero-engine development and strengthening India’s long-term ambitions in fighter aircraft and aerospace propulsion technology.
