Donny, a specialist explosive-detection canine from the National Security Guard’s (NSG) K9 Unit, has been awarded the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Commendation Card for his role in counter-terrorism operations following the Red Fort blast in November 2025.
The commendation was presented on the occasion of Independence Day 2026 in recognition of Donny’s outstanding performance, courage and contribution to public safety during high-risk operations.
Donny was deployed at the Red Fort on November 10, 2025, following the VBIED blast at the site. The attack had resulted in the deaths of 12 people and left 32 others critically injured. Amid the debris and heightened security threat, Donny was tasked with screening the blast site for explosive traces.
According to officials, the K9 detected and confirmed the presence of explosive traces, enabling forensic and security teams to secure the area and conduct further investigations. His detection capability helped authorities identify potential secondary threats at a sensitive crime scene.
Donny was subsequently deployed on November 12, 2025, at Khandawali in Faridabad, where security teams were screening a vehicle suspected of being linked to the transportation of explosives associated with the Red Fort attack.
During the operation, Donny again detected explosive traces in the vehicle, providing critical inputs to investigators and helping security agencies thwart the possibility of further attacks.
Officials highlighted Donny’s ability to operate effectively under extreme pressure and in challenging environments. His timely interventions were credited with assisting security agencies in identifying potential threats and safeguarding public safety.
The COAS Commendation Card is awarded in recognition of exceptional dedication, professionalism and courage in the service of the nation. Donny’s recognition highlights the important role played by specialist K9 teams in explosive detection, counter-terrorism operations and post-blast security procedures.
The award also underlines the contribution of trained service animals working alongside security personnel in some of the most sensitive and dangerous operational environments.
Donny’s performance following the Red Fort blast has emerged as an example of the critical capabilities provided by specialist K9 units, particularly during complex security operations where rapid detection of explosives can help prevent further loss of life.
