The Tamil Nadu native was awarded the prestigious Sword of Honour and Gold Medal at the 29th Passing Out Parade of OTA Gaya on 5 September 2026, emerging as the overall best cadet and securing the first position in the Order of Merit.

Inspired by His Soldier Father

Lieutenant Shashi Kumar is the son of an Indian Army soldier, and his father’s service in uniform became an early source of inspiration for him. Growing up in a military family, he developed an ambition to wear the olive-green uniform and serve the country.

However, his journey to becoming an Army officer was far from conventional.

After completing his graduation, Kumar began his professional career with Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Despite having a corporate career ahead of him, his desire to serve in uniform remained stronger, prompting him to leave the private sector and pursue a career in the armed forces.

Joined Assam Rifles as a Havildar

Kumar subsequently joined the Assam Rifles as a Havildar, beginning his uniformed career from the ranks.

His performance stood out from the beginning. During training, he earned the Overall Best Recruit medal, demonstrating the discipline and leadership qualities that would later take him to the top of his course at OTA Gaya.

He went on to serve for approximately three years with the Assam Rifles, including deployment in the challenging counter-insurgency environment of Manipur.

Rather than considering his achievement complete, Kumar continued working towards his ambition of becoming a commissioned officer.

He eventually cleared the Services Selection Board (SSB) interview and earned his place at the Officers Training Academy, Gaya.

Rises to the Top at OTA Gaya

At OTA Gaya, Kumar joined the Short Service Commission (Technical) Men-65 course.

His performance during military training saw him rise to the prestigious appointment of Academy Under Officer (AUO), the senior-most cadet appointment at the academy.

At the Passing Out Parade, AUO P. Shashi Kumar commanded the parade as Parade Commander, leading his fellow officer cadets during the culmination of their rigorous training.

His all-round performance earned him both of the academy’s top distinctions — the Sword of Honour for being adjudged the best overall cadet and the Gold Medal for standing first in the Order of Merit.

Battalion Under Officer Deepak Singh Rawat secured the Silver Medal for finishing second in the Order of Merit, while Academy Cadet Adjutant Navneet Singh received the Bronze Medal for third position.

Commissioned Into the Gorkha Rifles

Following the traditional Antim Pag at OTA Gaya, Shashi Kumar was commissioned into the Indian Army with the rank of Lieutenant and is set to serve with the Gorkha Rifles.

His commissioning marked a particularly significant transition — from serving as a Havildar in the Assam Rifles to becoming an officer of the Indian Army.

The 29th Passing Out Parade at OTA Gaya witnessed the commissioning of 253 officer cadets, including 35 women, from the SSC (Technical) Men-65 and SSC (Technical) Women-36 courses.

The parade was reviewed by Lieutenant General Le Van Huong, Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the Vietnam People’s Army.

“Never Lose Courage”

Speaking about his achievement, Lieutenant Shashi Kumar credited his success to hard work, dedication, the support of his parents and the discipline and guidance provided by his instructors.

His message to young aspirants was equally straightforward: never lose courage.

He emphasised the importance of courage, hard work, discipline and punctuality in achieving one’s goals, drawing from his own experience of moving from a corporate career to the Assam Rifles and ultimately earning a commission in the Indian Army.

Army Training Command highlighted his journey as an example of resilience and unwavering determination.

Lieutenant P. Shashi Kumar’s story stands out not merely because he won the Sword of Honour, but because of the path he travelled to earn it — leaving a corporate job, serving from the ranks as an Assam Rifles Havildar, operating in a counter-insurgency environment, clearing the SSB and finally emerging as the best cadet of his course.

From the ranks to the Sword of Honour and now the Gorkha Rifles, his journey demonstrates how sustained discipline, ambition and perseverance can transform a long-held dream into reality.
