Continuing a proud military tradition spanning three generations, Simranjeet Kaur Chahal of Sirsgarh village in Haryana’s Ambala district has become a Lieutenant in the Indian Army, following in the footsteps of her grandfather and father.
Lieutenant Simranjeet returned to her ancestral village in uniform on Monday, September 7, 2026, where she received a grand welcome from family members and villagers. Residents gathered about a kilometre outside the village near the Sirsgarh school and welcomed the newly commissioned officer with dhol-nagara, flowers and garlands before accompanying her home.
For the Chahal family, Simranjeet’s entry into the officer ranks represents another chapter in a long association with the Indian Army. Her grandfather, Gunner Gurdayal Singh, served with 13 Field Regiment, while her father, Captain Arvinder Singh, retired after serving with 193 Medium Regiment.
The military tradition is also being carried forward by Simranjeet’s younger brother, Anshdeep Singh, who is currently serving with Sikh Regiment. With both siblings now in uniform, the family has continued its association with the armed forces into a third generation.
Simranjeet completed her schooling at Angel Public School in Barara before pursuing a Bachelor of Computer Applications from SD College, Ambala Cantonment. She later earned her Master of Computer Applications from Kurukshetra University.
Her interest in the Army, however, began much earlier. Growing up watching her grandfather and father wear the uniform inspired her to consider a military career. During college, she joined the National Cadet Corps, an experience that further strengthened her ambition to become an Army officer.
Her younger brother, who is around three years younger than her, joined the Army before she did. Seeing him in uniform added further motivation to her goal of earning a commission.
According to local reports, Simranjeet cleared the Combined Defence Services examination after completing her postgraduate studies and subsequently underwent officer training before being commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Indian Army.
Her arrival home became a celebration for the entire village. Captain Arvinder Singh described the atmosphere at the family home as being like a wedding, adding that the happiness of seeing his daughter return as an Army officer was even greater. He said the family’s joy multiplied when residents of the village came together to celebrate her achievement.
Following the reception, Lieutenant Simranjeet visited Baba Jorawar Singh–Baba Fateh Singh Gurdwara Sahib at Dosarka. There, Baba Jasvir Singh Khalsa honoured her with a siropa and offered his blessings for her military career.
Captain Arvinder Singh said patriotism and military service had long been part of the family. Having served himself, he has now seen both his son and daughter choose the armed forces, carrying forward the family’s tradition of serving the country.
Lieutenant Simranjeet credited discipline, determination and self-belief for helping her achieve her goal. In her message to young aspirants, she encouraged them to dream big and remain confident while putting in consistent hard work.
Her journey from Sirsgarh to the officer ranks of the Indian Army has also become a source of pride for the local community, particularly for young women from rural areas aspiring to pursue higher education and careers in the armed forces.
With a grandfather who served as a Gunner, a father who retired as a Captain, a brother currently serving as a soldier and Simranjeet now wearing the Lieutenant’s stars, the Chahal family has turned military service into a three-generation legacy.
