Kanker, September 14, 2026: A Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) havildar was found dead with his service rifle at the force’s Kuhche camp in Chhattisgarh’s Kanker district early on Monday. Police have described the death as a suspected case of self-inflicted gunshot injury. The motive has not been established, and an investigation is under way.
The deceased has been identified as Anand Prakash Tiwari, a native of Uttar Pradesh. He was posted with the 28th Battalion of the SSB at the Kuhche camp in the Antagarh area. Local reports have referred to him as a havildar; the English-language official account issued by ETV Bharat described him as a head constable. His family resides in Uttar Pradesh and has been informed.
According to information received from the camp, the incident occurred within the premises at about 5:00 a.m. Personnel at the camp heard a gunshot and found Tiwari dead. SSB officials informed the local police. Kanker Superintendent of Police Nikhil Rakhecha said a team from Antagarh police station had reached the spot. “It is reported that Jawan Anand Prakash Tiwari shot himself with his own service rifle. Further legal proceedings will be carried out based on the facts that emerge,” he said.
A forensic team has been summoned to collect evidence. Police said Tiwari’s mobile telephone would be examined to determine his recent contacts. Officers may also record statements from family members as part of the inquiry. No suicide note has been reported in official accounts published so far. The precise circumstances, including whether Tiwari was on a specific duty assignment at the time, have not been confirmed.
Kuhche lies in the Antagarh subdivision of Kanker, a district that has historically seen deployment of central armed police forces. The camp was reported to have been in a state of alarm after the incident. SSB and district police are coordinating on the inquest and related procedures, including post-mortem examination.
The cause remains unknown. Police have not attributed the death to any operational incident or confrontation. Official data cited in reporting noted that multiple cases of self-harm among paramilitary personnel were recorded in Chhattisgarh in 2024 and 2025. Further findings will depend on the forensic report, the examination of the service weapon, and statements recorded by Antagarh police.
