New Delhi, October 9: The CBI Special Task Branch, Mumbai, carried out coordinated raids across Delhi, Bihar, Haryana and West Bengal after registering a First Information Report (FIR) on a complaint filed by IBPS. The agency said the four accused fraudulently entered multiple stages of the selection process, including written examinations and interviews, by physically posing as candidates.
In a press release dated October 8, 2026, the CBI described the arrests as a major breakthrough in unmasking a habitual impersonation syndicate. The agency stated that the network undermined the integrity of public examinations and deprived genuine, hardworking aspirants of their rightful opportunities.
One of the four arrested is a CGST inspector. The CBI has not released the names of the accused, the specific examinations targeted, or the sections under which they have been booked. It has also not disclosed how the impersonators cleared identity checks at examination and interview centres.
IBPS, an autonomous body, conducts common recruitment examinations for participating public sector banks and other financial institutions, including the probationary officer, clerk and specialist officer tests. The complaint that led to the FIR was filed by the institute itself.
The CBI said its investigation is continuing to identify and establish the role of others involved in the racket. Further details on the scale of the impersonation, the candidates on whose behalf the accused appeared, and any results already declared are yet to be made public.
