President Droupadi Murmu on Monday, 12 October 2026, appointed Dr Sudha Yadav as the Governor of Karnataka. She succeeds Thawar Chand Gehlot, who had held the office since July 2021 and completed a tenure of approximately five years. The appointment forms part of a larger gubernatorial reshuffle covering six states.
Dr Yadav becomes only the second woman to serve as Governor of Karnataka. The first was V.S. Ramadevi, who held the post from December 1999 to August 2002.
Background and Education
Born on 16 October 1965 in Motla Kalan village, Rewari district, Haryana (Ahirwal region), Dr Yadav is approximately 60–61 years old. She completed her M.Sc. in Chemistry as a gold medallist from the University of Roorkee (now IIT Roorkee) in 1987 and obtained her Ph.D. in Chemistry from the same institution in 1992. She is also a recipient of the President’s Guide Award. Before entering public life, she worked as a lecturer.
Personal Loss and Entry into Politics
Dr Yadav is the widow of Deputy Commandant Sukhbir Singh Yadav of the Border Security Force (BSF), who was martyred on 26 May 1999 during the Kargil War while serving in the conflict zone (born 12 December 1961). She has two children. She entered electoral politics in the immediate aftermath of her husband’s supreme sacrifice. Then BJP in-charge of Haryana, Narendra Modi, proposed her candidature from the Mahendragarh Lok Sabha constituency in the 1999 general elections. She won the seat, defeating Rao Inderjit Singh by a margin of about 1.39 lakh votes, and served as a Member of Parliament in the 13th Lok Sabha from 1999 to 2004.
A road in Gurugram has been named after her husband (Shaheed Sukhbir Singh Yadav Marg) in recognition of his service.
Political and Organisational Career
After her term as MP, Dr Yadav continued in organisational roles within the Bharatiya Janata Party. She served as BJP national secretary and as national in-charge of the party’s OBC Morcha (appointed in 2015). She was a member of the National Commission for Backward Classes from 2019 to 2022. In August 2022, she was inducted into the BJP Parliamentary Board, the party’s highest decision-making body, becoming one of its prominent members and the second woman to serve on the board after Sushma Swaraj.
Context of the Appointment
The announcement was made by Rashtrapati Bhavan as part of a coordinated reshuffle. Other changes included the appointment of Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar as Governor of Tamil Nadu, the transfer of Om Prakash Mathur from Sikkim to Kerala, and new appointments for Odisha (Braj Mohan Ram), Uttarakhand (Dhal Singh Bisen), and Sikkim (Dushyant Gautam). The appointments take effect from the dates the individuals assume charge.
Senior leaders, including Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy and Karnataka BJP State President B.Y. Vijayendra, publicly welcomed the appointment and extended their congratulations, noting her academic credentials, parliamentary experience, and personal sacrifice as a Veer Nari.
Dr Yadav’s elevation to the constitutional post of Governor of Karnataka recognises both her long organisational service within the BJP and her personal association with the sacrifice of a Kargil martyr. She is expected to assume office in the coming days.
