Mumbai, October 28, 2026: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested Income Tax Inspector Subhash Kumar Yadav, posted in the Investigation Wing at the Income Tax Office, Scindia House (Ballard Estate), South Mumbai, while he was allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹15 lakh. The case relates to a demand to close a matter involving a benami property pending with the Income Tax Department’s Benami Prohibition Unit.
According to the CBI, the agency registered a case on October 27, 2026, against Yadav (also referred to in some reports as DDIT, Investigation Wing) and unknown others on the basis of a complaint by a Mumbai-based individual. The complainant alleged that Yadav had demanded ₹20 lakh to ensure the closure of the benami property case. After negotiations, the amount was settled at ₹15 lakh.
The sequence of events, as detailed in reports including those from The Times of India, began when the complainant received an Income Tax notice in February 2026. He attended the Scindia House office and submitted his explanation to a senior officer in the presence of Yadav and another Income Tax inspector. He was subsequently called back repeatedly. After a meeting at Scindia House, the two inspectors allegedly took him to a nearby roadside tea stall and demanded the bribe. Reluctant to pay, the complainant approached the CBI.
The CBI laid a trap on Tuesday, October 27, and caught Yadav red-handed while he was accepting the ₹15 lakh from the complainant. Following the arrest, searches at his premises led to the recovery of ₹11 lakh in cash and incriminating documents. Electronic devices were also seized for examination.
Yadav was produced before a competent court in Mumbai on Wednesday, October 28. The court remanded him to two days’ CBI custody until October 30. While granting custody, the court observed that it was needed for a detailed investigation into the involvement of other accused persons, examination of digital devices, and collection of a specimen voice sample. The CBI informed the court that Yadav had not cooperated and had given evasive replies regarding the bribe money and others involved.
Additional details from The Times of India indicate that Yadav had been transferred from Benami Prohibition Unit-I in June 2026 and was working in the Investigation Wing at the time of his arrest. The agency is examining his work and access to confidential information related to the unit. Further investigation is underway to identify any other persons involved and to scrutinise the recovered documents.
The CBI has confirmed the arrest through an official statement and social media post, underscoring its ongoing efforts against corruption in government departments. The case remains under active investigation.
This report is based on contemporaneous accounts from the CBI and multiple news outlets published on October 28–29, 2026. All allegations remain subject to judicial scrutiny.
