Malda, West Bengal — Two brothers, one of them an Agniveer serving in the Indian Army, were arrested after allegedly assaulting a traffic Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) during a routine helmet-checking drive on the stretch between Naogama and Pukhuria under Pukhuria police station limits.
According to police, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening (around 28–29 October 2026). ASI Ajmal Hossain (also referred to in reports as Azam Hossain or Sheikh Ajmal), posted with the traffic department, intercepted a motorcycle carrying two riders who were not wearing helmets. When the officer asked them to produce their driving licence and began photographing the vehicle for documentation, an argument ensued.
Masidur Rahaman, identified as an Agniveer in the Indian Army and a resident of Paranpur village in Pukhuria (in his late 20s), allegedly punched the ASI on the nose. His brother, Safikul Rahman (also spelled Sofikul or Shafiqul in some reports), is alleged to have abused the police personnel at the spot. The confrontation resulted in the officer suffering a bleeding nose that required three stitches at a local hospital. His body camera and the point-of-sale machine used for collecting traffic fines were also damaged.
Malda Superintendent of Police Anupam Singh stated that the two had violated traffic rules and became involved in an argument while photographs were being taken. “Two bikers violated traffic rules. When photographs were being taken, they argued with the officer, punched him, and broke his camera. We have arrested both, and cases have been registered for assault, obstructing a public servant from discharging his duty, and damaging government property,” the SP said.
Police registered cases against the brothers under relevant provisions covering assault, obstruction of a public servant in the discharge of official duties, and damage to government property. Authorities informed Masidur Rahaman’s army superiors of his arrest. Reports indicate the Agniveer was on leave at the time; some accounts place his posting in Madhya Pradesh. The brothers were taken into custody following the incident.
The episode underscores the risks faced by traffic personnel during roadside enforcement, particularly when body cameras and digital equipment are involved in documenting violations. Investigation is ongoing, and the accused will be produced before the court in due course as per procedure.
This report is based on statements from Malda police and contemporaneous local news coverage. All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
