Port Blair, November 1, 2026: Headquarters Chief Engineer, Andaman and Nicobar Zone, under the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC), organised Works Symposium 2026 from October 29 to 30, focusing on the development of sustainable, resilient and future-ready defence infrastructure across India’s strategically important island territories.
The two-day symposium was held under the theme “Sustainable Islands, Resilient Future: Future Ready Infrastructure with Ecological Stewardship.” It brought attention to the importance of integrating modern engineering solutions with environmental conservation while addressing the unique operational and logistical challenges of island infrastructure development.
The discussions covered several critical areas, including emerging construction technologies, green infrastructure, renewable energy, digital engineering, sustainable water and waste management, and the development of resilient airfields, ports, marine facilities and underground infrastructure.
Special emphasis was placed on overcoming the geographical, environmental and logistical constraints associated with infrastructure development in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Participants explored innovative technologies and sustainable engineering practices aimed at strengthening operational readiness while minimising environmental impact.
The symposium also highlighted the importance of collaboration between the Military Engineer Services (MES), academic institutions and industry partners. Deliberations focused on identifying practical solutions, developing pilot projects and translating innovative ideas into actionable strategies for climate-resilient defence infrastructure.

With the Andaman and Nicobar Islands occupying a strategically significant position in the Indian Ocean Region, the development of reliable and sustainable military infrastructure remains essential for supporting operational capabilities and long-term defence preparedness.
The symposium reinforced the Andaman and Nicobar Command’s vision of harmonising strategic infrastructure development with geographical realities and ecological responsibilities. The initiative aims to ensure that defence modernisation and environmental preservation progress together, contributing to a more sustainable and resilient island future.
