Recently, Indian Air Force was all over in news when it decided to open combat roles to women by allowing them to join the fighter stream.
Looks like the Defence ministry is all set to make news again by considering the idea of raising an all women battalion and even stationing of women on warships.
Currently, women in the army and navy act in support roles. They are not allowed to move to war front or on warships.
But pitching for a greater role of women in the armed forces, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar mooted this idea after breaking the “psychological barrier” with the induction of female fighter pilots.
Although the DM has restrained for women in submarine operations currently, he said warships can be modified to meet the needs of women, and this is still a great idea if enforced.
The Defence Ministry is also considering women officers to be inducted through the NDA and Sainik Schools.
If the Army and the Navy are opened up for combat roles for women, India will join the small club of countries in the world, including US, Israel, to have such a system.

According to him, the question of women officers leading a men’s team, if there is a question of initial resistance to it, can also be taken care of by the ministry.
Parrikar said he will soon meet with the three service chiefs to work out increasing role of females.
