In a significant move towards women empowerment and showcasing Nari Shakti (woman power), the Indian Army has announced the establishment of two girls’ sports companies. These will be located at the Army Sports Institute in Pune and the Army Marksmanship Unit in Mhow, with operations commencing by April.
This initiative is aimed at nurturing young talent in sports while offering them a pathway to a career within the force.
Officials, who preferred to remain anonymous, revealed that this endeavor aligns with the national agenda of promoting gender equality and empowering women through sports. The program is designed to scout for promising young female athletes across the country and provide them with comprehensive training in sports such as shooting, archery, athletics, boxing, and weightlifting.

Additionally, these young sportswomen will receive formal education and administrative support to excel both in their sporting careers and personal development.
The Army Sports Institute and the Army Marksmanship Unit are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, including sports medicine centers, rehabilitation services, and expert coaching, ensuring the athletes receive the best training environment.
Participants in these sports companies will have the opportunity to be recruited into the Indian Army as non-commissioned officers, junior commissioned officers, or through the Agniveer scheme, highlighting the program’s dual focus on sports excellence and career development.
These initiatives are further supported by the presence of senior army athletes and sportspersons at these centers, who will serve as role models and mentors to the young trainees.
The success of Havildar Preeti Rajak, who was promoted to Subedar making her the first woman in the Indian Army to achieve this rank, underscores the potential of this program.
Rajak, a champion trap shooter and silver medalist at the 19th Asian Games 2022, exemplifies the heights of success that can be achieved through dedication and support within the Army’s sports framework.
