AFMS and IIT Hyderabad Forge Partnership to Enhance Military Healthcare

In a significant move to advance military healthcare, the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Hyderabad.

The agreement, aimed at fostering innovation and research in medical sciences, was formalized by Lt Gen Daljit Singh, Director General of AFMS, and Prof B S Murty, Director of IIT Hyderabad.

The primary objective of this MoU is to develop novel medical devices and address health issues specific to soldiers deployed in various terrains. IIT Hyderabad, renowned for its technological prowess, will leverage its departments of Biotechnology, Biomedical Engineering, and Bioinformatics to provide the technical expertise necessary for this collaboration.

The MoU also includes provisions for educational exchanges and training programs. These initiatives aim to:

  • Facilitate student exchange programs, allowing students to gain practical experience and exposure to military healthcare challenges.
  • Offer short-term courses for undergraduates, providing them with specialized knowledge relevant to military medical needs.
  • Initiate faculty exchange programs to promote knowledge sharing and collaborative research between AFMS and IIT Hyderabad.

During the signing ceremony, Lt Gen Daljit Singh emphasized the AFMS’s dedication to providing comprehensive medical care to soldiers, from primary care to specialized tertiary care.

He noted that this partnership with IIT Hyderabad marks a significant step towards leveraging advanced technology to enhance medical research and training.

This collaboration is expected to significantly improve the quality of life for soldiers and their families, ensuring they receive the best possible care regardless of their deployment conditions.

Prof B S Murty, on his part, highlighted IIT Hyderabad’s commitment to addressing the unique medical challenges faced by the Armed Forces. He assured that the institution would work diligently to provide prompt and effective solutions, reinforcing the partnership’s goal of fostering innovation in military healthcare.
