The steel-cutting ceremony for the first Next-Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) was held on May 31, 2024, at the Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. The event was graced by senior officials of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and representatives from the Ministry of Defence.
This ceremony marks the commencement of a significant project aimed at enhancing India’s maritime capabilities.
In December 2023, the Ministry of Defence signed a contract with MDL for the procurement of six NGOPVs for the ICG, at a total cost of Rs 1,614.89 crore.
This ambitious project is set to strengthen coastal and offshore patrol capabilities, ensuring the safeguarding of India’s maritime zones and boosting the operational efficiency of the ICG.
The NGOPV project is a testament to the collaborative efforts between the ICG, MDL, and various stakeholders involved. The first vessel is scheduled for delivery by May 2027, with subsequent vessels to follow, thereby systematically boosting the operational readiness of the ICG.
The NGOPV project is in line with the Indian government’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India), emphasizing the importance of indigenous manufacturing and technological self-sufficiency.
