In a pivotal announcement for India’s national security, Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi unveiled that the plan for integrated theatre commands has reached an advanced stage and is poised for government review. This development represents a crucial leap toward the modernization and restructuring of the country’s armed forces.

Speaking at the Col Pyara Lal Memorial Lecture at the United Services Institution in New Delhi, General Dwivedi emphasized the collaborative efforts circulating among the heads of the Army, Navy, and Air Force, along with the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), regarding the proposed integrated structure. “We have been able to devise a complete structure and plan nearly everything. I think now it’s at a mature stage to be presented to our decision-makers,” he stated.

The integrated theatre commands seek to consolidate the operations of the three branches of the armed forces under a singular commander, facilitating enhanced coordination and efficiency in addressing security threats. The initiative is tailored to tackle not only immediate risks but also long-term strategic challenges faced by India, necessitating a unified military response.

General Dwivedi underscored the significant progress made toward fostering joint operations among the services. This includes the establishment of three operational joint logistics nodes, advancements in joint doctrines and standard operating procedures, and the creation of combined maintenance and repair organizations.

He pointed out that around 200 issues tied to inter-service cooperation have been recognized, with approximately 30 percent having been effectively resolved. A common operational planning process is also being formulated, incorporating wargames, cutting-edge communication technology, shared digital maps, geo-referencing systems, and the collaborative use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Moreover, intelligence-gathering resources are being streamlined to support integrated military operations.

The shift towards integrated theatre commands signifies a transformative phase for the Indian military, aimed at optimizing capabilities in a rapidly changing security landscape. This restructuring is anticipated to bolster India’s readiness and responsiveness to an array of threats and challenges.

As the government’s final endorsement remains pending, General Dwivedi’s announcement is heralded as a critical milestone in the journey toward a more cohesive and effective Indian military.
