Aeronautical Development Agency to Refurbish Tejas Technology Demonstrator 2 for Display in Hyderabad
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) has unveiled plans to refurbish and showcase the Tejas Technology Demonstrator 2 (TD2) aircraft at the Research Centre Imarat (RCI) in Hyderabad. This landmark aircraft played a vital role in the development of India’s Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas program and will be transformed into a static exhibit at the ORANGE Facility, which is recognized for its Outdoor Radar Cross Section (RCS) testing capabilities.
Originally taking to the skies on June 6, 2002, the TD2 was instrumental in validating numerous systems and aerodynamic configurations crucial for the Tejas fighter jet. Throughout its operational history, the aircraft completed an impressive 305 developmental flights and was specially modified to test the Kaveri engine in-flight.
The refurbishment process will involve several modifications aimed at preparing the aircraft for its static display. Key enhancements include:
- Stabilization: A mechanism will be installed to lock the main landing gear doors, ensuring the aircraft remains stable while displayed on a raised platform.
- Armament Simulation: An R73 pylon will be added, along with dummy launchers and missiles, to enhance the aircraft’s representation as a combat-ready jet.
- Aesthetic Enhancements: Missing wing fuselage fairings will be replaced, and other missing components, including rubber seals, will be installed to elevate the aircraft’s visual appeal.
The ADA has put out a tender to solicit bids for the refurbishment project. Once completed, the TD2 will be mounted on a raised platform at the ORANGE facility, allowing visitors and future generations of aerospace engineers to appreciate the monumental advancements achieved during the LCA program.
The LCA Tejas program has since progressed significantly, with the Tejas now serving as a fully operational and combat-ready aircraft for the Indian Air Force. The TD2 exhibit will stand as a testament to the program’s evolution and India’s escalating aerospace capabilities, inspiring a new generation in the field of aviation technology.
