Netherlands Awards Airbus Contract for 12 H225M Caracal Helicopters

In a significant move to bolster its defense capabilities, the Dutch Ministry of Defense has entered into a contract with Airbus for the acquisition of 12 H225M Caracal helicopters. The agreement, which encompasses not only the helicopters but also support and services, was formalized at the Euronaval trade exhibition held in Paris.

The contract was signed by Jan Willem Hartman, the Head of the Netherlands Command Materiel and IT (COMMIT) agency, alongside Bruno Even, the CEO of Airbus Helicopters. During the signing ceremony, Even expressed his pride in the renewed commitment from the Royal Netherlands Air Force and the COMMIT agency towards Airbus’s offerings. He stated, “We are very proud to see the Royal Netherlands Air Force and COMMIT renewing their trust in Airbus Helicopters.” He also highlighted that the selection of the H225M followed a meticulous evaluation process after a call for tender, ultimately deeming the Airbus helicopter best suited for the demanding operations required by special forces.

The H225M Caracal is a versatile twin-engine helicopter designed for various military missions, including troop transport, combat search and rescue, and medical evacuation. Equipped with two Makila 2A1 engines and a five-blade rotor system, the H225M enhances operational mobility. The aircraft is capable of carrying up to 28 troops alongside its two-person crew. It has a cruise speed of 70 nautical miles (approximately 80 miles or 130 kilometers) and can handle a maximum take-off weight of 11,160 kilograms (25,573 pounds).

Moreover, the H225M can be armed with a variety of weaponry, including machine guns, rocket launchers, anti-ship missiles, guided missiles, and aerial torpedoes, making it a formidable asset for military operations.

This recent contract is part of the Netherlands’ broader strategy to modernize its air force capabilities. Earlier in 2023, the Dutch military had already placed an order for 14 H225M helicopters intended to replace the aging AS532 Cougar medium-weight multipurpose helicopters, which have served for nearly 30 years.

With this contract, Airbus further solidifies its position as a leading supplier of rotorcraft to armed forces globally, with a significant presence of 350 H225Ms and H225s currently operational across 140 military customers.
