Israeli Air Strikes in Lebanon Leave 33 Dead as Tensions Escalate with Hezbollah

A significant escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah has resulted in at least 33 fatalities in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The Israeli military has intensified its air strikes primarily targeting regions where Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militant group, holds considerable power. Notable casualties were reported in the Baalbek-Hermel region, where 20 individuals lost their lives due to targeted attacks, including 11 people in the Knaissseh locality alone. In addition, the strikes left approximately 14 others injured.

In southern Lebanon, where Hezbollahโ€™s influence remains strong, at least 13 people were killed, among them seven rescuers affiliated with Hezbollah and its Shiite ally, Amal. The southern village of Hanouiyeh witnessed five fatalities, while another incident in the village of Deir Qanun led to the deaths of six rescuers from the Amal-linked Risala Scouts association and one from the Hezbollah-affiliated Islamic Health Committee.

The Israeli military stated that its aircraft conducted strikes on โ€œHezbollah terrorist infrastructure sitesโ€ in the regions of Tyre and Baalbek, targeting operational facilities, weapons storage sites, and individuals classified as terrorists. An airstrike on the city of Nabatiyeh resulted in injuries to 12 individuals.

These recent attacks followed a previous wave of strikes that killed seven people, including two children, in the southern city of Tyre. The health ministry reported that 46 individuals were wounded, and rescue efforts were ongoing as workers searched for additional victims buried under the debris. The extent of destruction in Tyre was significant, with three buildings hit; images captured by the AFP depicted rescuers navigating wreckage and transporting the injured and deceased on stretchers.

In response to the assaults, Hezbollah proclaimed it had launched rocket and missile attacks on Israeli military positions, targeting installations near Haifa and claiming the downing of an Israeli drone over a village in south Lebanon. The recent surge in violence was sparked by Israelโ€™s air campaign, which intensified on September 23, complemented by the deployment of ground troops a week later. This escalation follows nearly a year of sporadic cross-border exchanges, particularly in the wake of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel, which ignited a broader conflict in Gaza.

Since the onset of these hostilities, Lebanonโ€™s health ministry reports over 3,110 deaths attributable to the exchanges, with the majorityโ€”more than 2,700โ€”occurring after the intensified Israeli operations began on September 23. The impact of the conflict continues to resonate throughout the region, with widespread concerns about further escalation and humanitarian repercussions.
