Indian Navy Seizes 500kg of Crystal Methamphetamine in Arabian Sea Operation

In a significant operation in the Arabian Sea, the Indian Navy successfully intercepted two Sri Lankan fishing vessels and seized approximately 500 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine. This operation, conducted on November 24 and 25, 2024, was initiated following crucial intelligence provided by the Sri Lankan Navy, which pointed to potential narcotics smuggling activities in the region.

To execute this operation, the Indian Navy employed a range of assets, including a ship, long-range maritime patrol aircraft, and remotely piloted aircraft. These resources were utilized to effectively locate and intercept the suspected vessels, demonstrating a high level of coordination and tactical efficiency.

The operation unfolded as the Indian naval ship, in conjunction with aerial support, approached the two fishing boats. This coordinated attack enabled the Indian forces to successfully board both vessels without incident. A ship from the Information Fusion Centre (Indian Ocean Region), based in Gurugram, further enhanced the Indian Navy’s efforts during the operation. In addition, a second naval ship was dispatched to support anti-narcotics initiatives, underscoring India’s commitment to combating drug trafficking in regional waters.

Once the vessels were secured, the crew onboard was apprehended, and the narcotics were seized. The Indian Navy is now in the process of transferring the two boats, their crew, and the confiscated drugs to Sri Lankan authorities. This handover will allow for further legal proceedings and investigations into the smuggling network operating in the area.

This operation highlights the growing collaboration between the Indian Navy and regional partners to tackle drug trafficking and enhance maritime security in the Indian Ocean. As illicit drug trade continues to pose challenges, the successful interception of these vessels marks a significant step in strengthening joint efforts against such illegal activities in the region.
