Cyclone Fengal Causes Severe Flooding and Disruption in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, Prompting Army Rescue Operations

Cyclone Fengal made landfall on the south coast of India on Saturday evening, resulting in significant disruptions and extensive damage across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. The aftermath of the cyclone has been brutal, with reports indicating that at least 19 fatalities occurred across India and Sri Lanka as torrential rains inundated many coastal areas.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Puducherry recorded its heaviest rainfall in 30 years, bringing nearly 50 centimeters of rain within a 24-hour period. This unprecedented downpour led to widespread flooding, compelling authorities to initiate urgent rescue efforts.

In response to the alarming situation, the Indian Army was called in to assist with rescue operations in Puducherry. Soldiers from the Chennai Garrison Battalion were deployed to help evacuate individuals stranded in severely affected localities such as Krishna Nagar, Kuber Nagar, and Jiva Nagar. Their efforts have been crucial; reports indicate that over 200 individuals were rescued in just these two neighborhoods alone. Visuals shared on social media captured the Army personnel navigating boats through waterlogged streets, helping families escape from their submerged homes.

Puducherry’s Chief Minister, N. Rangasamy, commented on the dire conditions, stating, “I inspected the flood-affected areas. Rescue teams are working tirelessly to evacuate those stranded in the floodwaters.” The urgency of the situation has seen collaboration with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and local authorities to ensure the safety and recovery of affected residents.

As rescue operations continue, the Indian Army remains on high alert, actively supporting flood relief efforts in various parts of Puducherry. Their mobilization underscores the severity of Cyclone Fengal’s impact, with local communities now grappling with the fallout from the catastrophic weather event.

The region’s infrastructure has been significantly compromised as it deals with the extensive aftermath of the cyclone, with further assessments still ongoing to evaluate the full extent of the damage and necessary recovery measures.
