Fishing Boat Captain Booked After Collision with Indian Navy Submarine INS Karanj; Two Dead

The tragic collision between a fishing boat and the Indian Navy submarine INS Karanj in the Arabian Sea has led to significant legal consequences for the skipper of the fishing vessel, FV Marthoma. The incident, which occurred approximately 70 nautical miles off the coast of Goa, resulted in the loss of two lives and left 11 others injured. The fishing boat had a crew of 13 on board at the time of the accident, with 11 crew members successfully rescued during the subsequent search operations.

The INS Karanj, known as one of the Indian Navy’s most advanced assets, is part of the stealth Scorpene class submarines. This model is recognized globally for its cutting-edge technology and capabilities, which include enhanced stealth features and advanced warfare systems. Despite the submarine’s robust design, the collision reportedly caused damages exceeding ₹10 crore.

Following the incident, a complaint was filed by a Navy officer, leading to the registration of a case against the boat’s captain at Mumbai’s Yellow Gate police station. The charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita include causing death by a rash and negligent act, as well as endangering human life. Authorities have emphasized that a thorough investigation is now underway to determine the specific circumstances surrounding the collision and the factors that contributed to it.

As the investigation progresses, the incident has raised concerns regarding maritime safety and navigation practices, particularly in waters frequented by both civilian and military vessels. The case highlights the importance of adherence to safety protocols in order to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
