US Approves $1.1 Billion Sale of MH-60R Seahawk Helicopter Equipment to India

The U.S. government has granted approval for the proposed sale of equipment and follow-on support valued at approximately $1.1 billion to India, aimed at enhancing the Indian Navy’s fleet of multi-mission MH-60R Seahawk helicopters. This decision comes as part of ongoing efforts to bolster the defense capabilities of India, which has already begun integrating these advanced helicopters into its maritime operations.

The notification to the U.S. Congress revealed that India expressed interest in acquiring a range of equipment to support its ongoing induction of the MH-60R helicopters. The proposed purchase includes 30 multifunctional information distribution system-joint tactical radio systems, advanced data transfer systems, external fuel tanks, forward-looking infrared systems, and identification friend or foe equipment. Additionally, training and logistics support services for the helicopters are also part of this comprehensive package.

In March of this year, the Indian Navy commissioned its first squadron of six submarine-hunting MH-60R Seahawk helicopters at INS Garuda in Kochi. These helicopters are equipped with advanced armaments, including Hellfire missiles, MK-54 torpedoes, and precision-kill rockets, enhancing the Navy’s capabilities in maritime surveillance and anti-submarine warfare. By next year, India is expected to have inducted all 24 heavy-duty Seahawks as part of a broader $2.13 billion contract signed with the U.S. in February 2020. These helicopters feature multi-mode radars and night-vision devices, making them essential assets for modern naval operations.

The Biden administration emphasized that the new sale would contribute to U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives by reinforcing the strategic partnership between the two nations. The U.S. acknowledged India’s role as a major defense partner and its significance in promoting political stability, peace, and economic progress in the Indo-Pacific and South Asia regions.

Further, the administration noted that the proposed sale would bolster India’s capabilities to deter existing and emerging threats without altering the fundamental military balance in the region. This reflects a commitment to supporting India as it enhances its defense readiness and regional security posture amid evolving geopolitical dynamics.
