In a momentous ceremony that underscores the enduring friendship between India and Nepal, General Ashok Raj Sigdel was awarded the Honorary Rank of General of the Indian Army by President Droupadi Murmu. This prestigious rank was conferred during a special Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, recognizing General Sigdel’s exemplary military service and his substantial contributions to strengthening the long-standing relationship between the two countries, as noted in a release from the President’s Secretariat.
General Sigdel’s visit to India spans four days, from December 11 to December 14. During this time, he has engaged in extensive discussions with key military leaders, including Indian Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi. Their dialogue focused on enhancing bilateral defence cooperation and addressing regional security challenges. General Dwivedi announced the transfer of a target practice drone along with medical equipment intended for military field hospitals in Nepal, symbolizing a commitment to mutual support.
The meetings also provided General Sigdel with insights into India’s security framework and initiatives. The Army Design Bureau presented a comprehensive overview of India’s current security strategies and future outlook, pinpointing potential areas for collaboration with the Nepalese military. The Ministry of Defence (MoD) highlighted that these interactions not only offered valuable insights into India’s security strategies but also reinforced the significance of continued diplomatic and military exchanges.
In addition to meetings with military officials, General Sigdel held discussions with high-ranking members of the Indian government, including National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, and Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri. These conversations aimed at addressing broader defence and security matters, with the overarching goal of fortifying bilateral relations.
General Sigdel expressed admiration for India’s advancements under the “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” initiative during his engagements with representatives from India’s defense sector. His visit also included a solemn tribute at the National War Memorial in New Delhi, where he received a formal Guard of Honour.
The Ministry of Defence emphasized that General Sigdel’s visit is intended to enhance military cooperation between India and Nepal and to explore new avenues for defense collaboration, further solidifying the ties between the two nations in a rapidly changing geopolitical landscape.
