Indian and Russian Navies Commence 14th Edition of Maritime Bilateral Exercise INDRA 2025

Exercise INDRA 2025

New Delhi, 28 March 2025: The 14th edition of Exercise INDRA, a symbol of the enduring maritime partnership between India and Russia, is set to take place off the coast of Chennai from 28 March to 02 April 2025. Since its inception in 2003, Exercise INDRA has evolved into a cornerstone of India-Russia strategic cooperation, fostering enhanced naval interoperability and operational synergy between the two navies.

Strengthening Maritime Cooperation

Exercise INDRA 2025 will be conducted in two phases:

  • Harbour Phase: Scheduled from 28 to 30 March 2025 at Chennai, this phase will include a range of professional and cultural exchanges to strengthen ties between the participating forces. Activities will feature:
    • Opening Ceremony to mark the commencement of the exercise
    • Subject Matter Expert Exchanges (SMEEs) to facilitate knowledge sharing
    • Reciprocal Visits and Sports Fixtures to foster camaraderie
    • Pre-sail Briefings to ensure seamless coordination during the sea phase
  • Sea Phase: Set to take place from 31 March to 02 April 2025 in the Bay of Bengal, the sea phase will focus on advanced naval drills and joint operations, including:
    • Tactical manoeuvres and coordinated fleet operations
    • Live weapon firings and anti-air operations
    • Underway replenishment to enhance logistical endurance
    • Helicopter cross-deck landings and exchange of sea-riders to refine interoperability

Participating Units and Assets

Exercise INDRA 2025 will witness the participation of frontline assets from both navies. The Russian Federation Navy will be represented by Ships Pechanga, Rezkiy, and Aldar Tsydenzhapov, while the Indian Navy will participate with INS Rana, INS Kuthar, and Maritime Patrol Aircraft P-8I.

Enhancing Operational Synergy and Diplomatic Ties

The exercise aims to bolster maritime cooperation, promote operational excellence, and exchange best operational practices between the Indian and Russian navies. The inclusion of complex naval drills, live-fire exercises, and cross-deck operations highlights the growing operational synergy and mutual trust between the two maritime forces.
