In a significant anti-corruption crackdown, the vigilance department of Uttarakhand arrested a retired army Colonel who was serving as the District Sainik Welfare Officer in Bageshwar district for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹50,000. The officer was accused of demanding the bribe in exchange for facilitating service extension-related work, officials confirmed on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

The case came to light after a complaint was lodged through the state’s 1064 toll-free number, alleging that the retired soldier was illegally seeking a bribe to expedite paperwork related to service extensions at the District Sainik Welfare Department. Following the complaint, the vigilance team initiated an investigation and laid a trap. On May 24, the accused, a resident of Rampur village in Tehsil Kapkot, was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe amount.

The arrested officer has been booked under relevant sections of the Prevention of Corruption Act, and the vigilance department has launched a detailed inquiry into the matter. This incident underscores the state government’s commitment to maintaining transparency and rooting out corrupt practices within its departments.

According to a government release, this arrest is part of a broader crackdown on corruption in Uttarakhand under the leadership of Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. The administration has taken strict and continuous measures to tackle corruption, leading to the arrest of over 150 individuals in the last three years. The government claims that such decisive actions have strengthened public trust and sent a strong message to those engaged in corrupt activities.

The release further quoted that CM Dhami has made eradicating corruption his top priority since taking office. The zero-tolerance approach towards bribery and misuse of power has reportedly increased vigilance and caution among government officers and employees. This particular case is seen as a testament to the effectiveness of the state’s anti-corruption mechanisms and the growing accountability in public service.

Uttarakhand’s vigilance officials said the arrest would serve as a deterrent to others and reaffirmed their commitment to continuing their efforts to promote integrity and good governance. The vigilance department has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any corrupt activities through available channels to strengthen the fight against corruption in the state.

With corruption being a major challenge in many parts of India, such strong enforcement actions by state governments are viewed as essential steps toward improving governance and ensuring that public services are delivered fairly and efficiently. The vigilance department’s swift response in this case is likely to encourage further confidence among citizens in the government’s ability to uphold justice and transparency.
